According to The Guardian , on July 26 (local time), SpaceX's giant Starship rocket successfully completed its first test flight after numerous failures.
This was the 10th test and the first time Starship successfully passed key technical challenges, particularly regarding reusability – a strategic goal for SpaceX.
The 123-meter-tall, stainless steel rocket lifted off from the Starbase facility (southern Texas) at 6:30 p.m. local time (6:30 a.m. on August 27 in Vietnam), to the excited cheers of the engineering team.
This flight focused on testing the new thermal insulation brick system, satellite deployment capabilities, and hundreds of technical improvements over previous versions.
After successfully navigating the re-entry phase – the biggest challenge of any mission – the upper section of Starship landed safely in the Indian Ocean. Previously, this re-entry phase had resulted in the destruction of the spacecraft during several test runs.
This success comes after a series of consecutive failures, raising doubts about billionaire Elon Musk's ability to carry out ambitious space missions.
Previously, the launch scheduled for August 25 (local time) was canceled just 40 seconds before departure due to thick clouds. On August 24, the launch was also postponed due to a liquid oxygen leak at the launch pad.
This year, Starship has experienced several serious incidents, including two explosions over the Caribbean and an explosion during a ground test in June, with debris flying into Mexican territory.
Nevertheless, Elon Musk remains optimistic. On X, he wrote: "In about 6-7 years, there will definitely be a day when Starship is launched more than 24 times in just 24 hours."
