According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the Tesla Model Y topped the September wholesale sales chart with 59,907 units, becoming the best-selling car model in the billion-people market. After being surpassed by BYD Song for many months, Tesla's electric car returned to the throne, showing that the competition is clearly shifting between international brands and domestic manufacturers.
September also saw an acceleration in the entire market. The total number of passenger cars in China reached 2.803 million units, up 12.4% year-on-year and 13% month-on-month. In that picture, the new energy vehicle (NEV) group continued to play the leading role in growth.

September picture: data and sales milestones
The Model Y’s No. 1 position comes amid a market that has accelerated month-over-month and year-over-year. Across the segment, SUVs have seen faster-than-average growth; MPVs have also shown signs of recovery. This reflects a wide range of consumer tastes, from small city cars to mid-size SUVs and family options.
Top 5 best-selling car models: Model Y leads the large NEV group
The September rankings show the dominance of new energy vehicles in the top. Data compiled by CPCA, quoted from CarNewsChina:

Manufacturer: BYD holds the top market share
From a manufacturer perspective, BYD continued to hold the top position with 393,000 wholesale vehicles, accounting for 14% of the market share, despite a 5.9% decrease compared to the same period last year. Geely ranked second with 273,000 vehicles (9.7% market share, down 35.2%) and Chery ranked third with 269,000 vehicles (9.6% market share, down 13.5%).
Positioning the Model Y in the sales race
The Tesla Model Y’s return to the top spot underscores the appeal of electric vehicles in China, where NEVs have grown strongly and dominate the top 25. September’s results also reflect a diversification of demand: from small urban cars like the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, to popular models from BYD and emerging options like Geely Geome Xingyuan.
From September data, Model Y stands out in terms of commercial performance, while domestic competitors maintain a large margin in terms of products and coverage. The growth of the SUV segment and the expansion of NEVs create a launching pad for electric vehicles to continue to increase market share in the coming time, if consumer trends and policies maintain stable support levels.
Conclude
The Model Y’s September sales lead is a highlight of the Chinese market, amid a rapid acceleration of NEV sales and domestic brands holding a large market share. CPCA data shows: a month of even growth by segment, the dominance of NEVs in the top 25, and a top race between the Model Y, Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, Geely Geome Xingyuan, and the duo BYD Song and BYD Qin. This trend is the basis for assessing the short-term appeal of electric vehicles, and at the same time, poses significant competitive pressure for all manufacturers.
