On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2025), we had the opportunity to visit the National Monument of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School (in Tan Thai Commune, Dai Tu District, Thai Nguyen Province). This is the first journalism training facility of Vietnam's revolutionary journalism.

In 1949, our nation's resistance war against the French entered a fierce phase. Realizing the important role of the revolutionary journalist team, under the direction of President Ho Chi Minh , the Viet Minh Central Committee decided to open the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School "to partly meet the needs of press propaganda in the period of preparing for the general counter-offensive and the victorious general counter-offensive". Comrade Hoang Quoc Viet, Secretary of the Viet Minh Central Committee, emphasized the reason why the School was named after Mr. Huynh Thuc Khang: "Named after a patriotic veteran who was also a long-time, famous journalist, the class hopes to set an example for students of the virtue of diligent learning, a progressive organizational mind, an indomitable spirit - the basic virtues of a journalist - to always be ready to serve the profession and the nation in the heroic resistance war...".

The course has 42 students, most of whom are working in central and local journalism (mainly from Nghe An and above) such as: Nguyen Binh, An Chau, Mai Thanh Hai, Mai Ho, Luu Huong, Hai Nhu, Pham Viet Thieu, Nguyen Tho (Cuu Quoc Newspaper), Tran Tat Dac ( Voice of Vietnam Radio ), Tong Quang Khai (Information Agency, Courrier du Vietnam Newspaper), Tran Kien (Independence Newspaper), Ngo Tung, Mai Cuong (Labor Newspaper), Nong Viet Liem (Cao Bang Newspaper), Dang Van (Bac Giang Propaganda), Phuong Lam (Lien Khu X Women's Cuu Quoc Newspaper) and some other students such as: Vuong Nhu Chiem, Ly Thi Trung, Duong Thanh Huyen, Huu Mai, Tu Bich Hoang, Tran Vu... The school's lecturers are famous political activists, journalists, artists - people who are very good at journalism and politics such as: Truong Chinh, Vo Nguyen Giap, Hoang Quoc Viet, Tran Huy Lieu, Le Quang Dao, To Huu, Xuan Thuy, Nguyen Thanh Le, Quang Dam, Do Phon, Nhu Phong, Tu Mo, Tu Giay, Vu Dinh Hoe, Nguyen Van Hai, Ha Xuan Truong, Tran Dinh Tho, Nguyen Huy Tuong, The Lu, Nguyen Dinh Thi, Nam Cao...

The opening ceremony of the course was held on April 4, 1949 and the closing ceremony was held after 3 months due to the tense war situation. During that time, President Ho Chi Minh sent letters to the class twice (June 9 and July 1949) to encourage the teaching and learning spirit of the lecturers and students...

With a deep desire to honor journalism and pay tribute to generations of revolutionary journalists in the resistance war against France, in 2019, the Vietnam Journalists Association demarcated the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School relic site and erected a memorial stele at this location. On March 28, 2019, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 1182/QD-BVHTTDL to rank the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School Site as a National Monument. In 2024, the Vietnam Journalists Association assigned the Vietnam Press Museum to continue to renovate and embellish this National Monument site into a more spacious complex. Currently, the relic complex has a total area of over 858 m2, including the following items: square, War Zone Press exhibition space, Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School exhibition space, hall, garden, etc.

Visiting this historic school, the next generation of Party journalists like us could not help but be moved. Journalist Huu Minh, former member of the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association, former Editor-in-Chief of Thai Nguyen Newspaper, former Director of Thai Nguyen Radio and Television Station - a veteran journalist who has spent his entire life in the war zone, and who also contributed to the construction of the National Monument of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School, enthusiastically led the delegation on a tour.

The school is located on a tree-lined road, in front of the immense Nui Coc Lake with mountains, rivers, clouds and sky. Passing through the gate of the relic with a sign reading “National Monument of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School”, on the right side is a relief with 48 portraits of the school’s Board of Directors, lecturers and students designed by artist Ngo Xuan Khoi and directly made by artist and sculptor Pham Sinh, former lecturer of sculpture at the University of Industrial Fine Arts, member of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association. The relief is 7.5m long and 2.8m high with a copper-coated composite material, depicting the scene of the opening day of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School with 48 characters including members of the Board of Directors, lecturers and students at a 1:1 ratio of real people based on a documentary photo collected by the Vietnam Press Museum. The relief realistically depicts the expressions and nuances of each character and is a special highlight in the exhibition space at the Monument.

On the left of the entrance gate is a stilt house displaying the Viet Bac War Zone Press 1946-1954. The 80m2 house, modeled after the stilt house of the Viet Minh Headquarters, was the command post of the Viet Minh Headquarters, where leaders directed and made many decisions for the resistance war, and at the same time, it was also the command post of the press agencies. The house takes stylized brocade patterns as the main color, expressing the color of the War Zone - where ethnic minorities live, during the resistance war, the people protected and sheltered the revolution, and the press force fulfilled its historical mission.

Located in the center of the Relic is the Exhibition House of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School. It is an 80m2 level 4 house built on a high hill, modeled after recorded documents and some remaining documentary images; it used to be a bamboo house, now it is a wooden frame house with a fireproof artificial thatched roof. The exhibition house is designed to stand out with 10 graphic walls in the style of a "war zone", evoking in visitors the most nostalgic and authentic emotions about the strokes and colors. These are images of beloved Uncle Ho, 2 letters that he sent to teachers and students of the school. These are also chalk lines recording class attendance, opening and closing dates, shown graphically on the blackboard, as if bringing us back to the beloved journalism class of that day. During the 3 months of eating, living and studying together, the students of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School became closer and more attached to each other than ever. They share the good and the bad, encourage and help each other to progress together.

Also in the exhibition space about the school, the Vietnam Press Museum also introduces some images about the working process, completing the dossier, field survey as well as leveling the ground, construction... to show the process of forming an exhibition area. Besides the graphic system of the exhibition space on the walls, the Vietnam Press Museum also arranges a display cabinet to introduce some autographs of the school's lecturers such as: Vo Nguyen Giap, Hoang Quoc Viet, To Huu, Do Duc Duc, Quang Dam, Nguyen Thanh Le, Ha Xuan Truong, Nguyen Van Hai, Tu Giay, Do Phon... and some artifacts associated with the lives of lecturers and students such as: Nguyen Thanh Le, Quang Dam, Mai Thanh Hai.

In parallel, the exhibition space is complemented by a zulo rotating shaft system (based on the idea of continuous rotation of rollers on a newspaper printing machine) introducing additional articles about the school as well as sketches from several newspapers such as: Truth, National Defense, People, People's Army... along with images of the Viet Bac War Zone through the lens of photographer Tran Van Luu.

In addition, the Relic Site also has a hall with a capacity of over 150 people, which is a place to organize conferences, seminars and other activities; a mini square serving event organization of 200m2...

The first class of journalists from Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School, under the leadership of the Party, shared the joys and sorrows, steadfastly accompanied the revolutionary journalism career, used their pens to fight on the front line against the enemy, and reached the final victory. Although only opening and training one course in a short time, Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School marked the initial victory on the ideological front, training journalists, laying the foundation for the development of Vietnam's revolutionary journalism later. Today, the spirit of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School is still mentioned as a symbol of the combination of revolutionary ethics and professional skills of journalists. The name of the school has become a historical mark in the development of Vietnam's revolutionary journalism.
