Visit Ta Con airport

Ta Con Airport, with its terrain being a 60-hectare valley, about 65 km from Dong Ha city (Quang Tri), was one of the strategic military bases of the US army in the years 1966 - 1968 at Khe Sanh battlefield. In terms of the airport's terrain, many people compare it to a "Dien Bien Phu" of the north central region.

This is a relic site and an open-air museum located in Hoa Thanh village (Tan Hop commune, Huong Hoa district), a tourist destination on the DMZ tour, a demilitarized zone tour - revisiting the old battlefield.

The relic site is quite simple with a few planes (C130, UH-1, CH-47), three rusty tanks lying on the grass. These are the planes and tanks that the US army used to fight in the Khe Sanh - Ta Con battlefield. Among them, the "one-time pride" of the air force, the C-130, is now a pile of scrap metal. The layout and restoration of the Ta Con airport relic is still quite sketchy, but it helps visitors imagine a continuous, mobile defense that the US army and soldiers of the old regime considered a "hard" position in the entire Khe Sanh stronghold system. The planes and tanks here are no longer dangerous, because they are "victims" left behind on Route 9, on the historic Khe Sanh after the retreat years ago.

Coming to Ta Con these days is the end of the rainy season, the grass growing in the airport is lush green and the wet trenches are blooming with white wildflowers. Every war has painful losses. Years and months patch up the plowed land with green grass and preserve the relics so that those who fought back and future generations can better understand the fierce years that have passed and appreciate the value of peace .

The war is long gone, the land full of bombs and bullets is now covered with endless coffee gardens, lush green corn and peanut fields and in the distance is a "wind power field" that is turning the dry Lao winds into a source of electricity for production. At Ta Con airport, the C-130 is there for tourists to see, take souvenir photos and who knows, from the engines immersed in the rain and sun, it will inspire a boy to dream of becoming a future mechanical engineer.
