Be careful from the first step

Having studied Biotechnology at Tay Nguyen University (Dak Lak), Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuyen was well-trained in tissue culture. After graduating and getting married, the desire to build a career and develop the family economy further motivated Ms. Xuyen to start a business.

Quickly grasping market trends, combined with scientific knowledge, at the end of 2018, Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuyen discussed with her husband and decided to start a business with cordyceps production technology. With 300 million VND in initial capital, Ms. Xuyen and her husband invested in machinery, equipment, and built a factory in their hometown, Thuan Ha commune, Dak Song district, Dak Nong province.

Initially having no experience, starting to practice producing the first batches of mushrooms, Ms. Xuyen determined to learn while doing to draw lessons for herself. No one succeeds right away, at first the product yield was not high, Ms. Xuyen was not upset but used that to gradually gain more experience.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuyen constantly researches and studies to diversify cordyceps products.

With the spirit of finding solutions to any difficulties, gradually, Ms. Xuyen and her husband have mastered the mushroom growing techniques as well as disease prevention methods to create quality cordyceps products. The joy is multiplied when her products are well received by the market.

After 2 years of starting the business, Ms. Xuyen and her husband's cordyceps mushroom production facility has been operating stably. Her main products are fresh mushrooms, freeze-dried mushrooms, and cordyceps wine, tea, and honey. Thanks to that, Ms. Xuyen's family has a stable source of income and capital to expand production scale.

In addition to producing fresh and dried cordyceps mushrooms and cordyceps wine, Ms. Xuyen's facility also supplies spawn to the market. Each batch of cordyceps mushrooms from tissue culture to harvest takes about 3 months. However, thanks to the overlapping production process, Ms. Xuyen regularly supplies mushrooms to the market. Currently, each year Xuyen produces about 20,000 - 25,000 mushroom spawn. With a selling price of 25 million VND/kg of mushroom spawn, each year Xuyen's revenue reaches more than 1 billion VND.

Constantly investing and devoting herself to production, considering product quality as a core value, many products such as cordyceps wine and cordyceps mushrooms of Ms. Xuyen have achieved 3-star OCOP certification.

Cordyceps products of Nguyen Thi Xuyen branch often appear at fairs and exhibitions introducing local OCOP products.

Diversify supply sources

Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuyen recalls that around 2021, many mushroom cultivation facilities in the region were opened, and the domestic cordyceps mushroom market also began to become saturated. Necessity is the mother of invention. Researching the market, Ms. Xuyen realized that if she wanted to develop, she needed to be creative, innovative, and diversify products to proactively create supply sources and meet consumer demand. Thinking and doing, Ms. Xuyen started the idea of ​​researching new product lines from cordyceps; in which she was particularly interested in cordyceps drink products combined with other nutritious agricultural products.

After 1 year of research and experimentation, Ms. Xuyen and her husband, along with their colleagues, decided to choose aloe vera to combine with cordyceps to produce a nutritious drink. Taking advantage of the available 270m² factory, Ms. Xuyen divided it into mushroom growing rooms, mushroom washing areas, raw material warehouses, bottling areas, sterilization areas... all of which must strictly ensure hygiene and safety standards during the production process of cordyceps and aloe vera drinks.

Ms. Xuyen's new product line of Cordyceps and Aloe Vera drinks targets urban customers with average incomes and above, priced from 140,000 - 160,000 VND/pack of 6 bottles. The product is registered as a trademark, and its product quality is declared to be eligible for widespread sale on the market.

In order to develop long-term and ensure sustainable raw material sources, Ms. Xuyen plans to support households growing aloe vera in the area. At the same time, in order to increase product output, she and her colleagues promote product sales on social networking platforms, agents, and distributors nationwide...

With the desire to expand the scale and build reputation in the market, Ms. Xuyen and her husband established An Tay Nguyen Company Limited, specializing in the production of products from Cordyceps mushrooms. Currently, Ms. Xuyen's company creates jobs for 2 regular female workers and 2 seasonal female workers with an average income of 6 million VND/person/month.

Leverage digital platforms to boost business

Realizing the importance of information technology in business development, Ms. Xuyen is especially interested and often spends time interacting and selling on digital platforms.

One of the tools that Ms. Xuyen regularly uses to sell and promote her products is the TikTok application, with livestreams at fixed times. Here, new products and accompanying promotions of the company will be informed directly to customers.

In addition to market expansion policies, Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuyen especially focuses on applying information technology and online sales channels to promote her products.

"Along with the application of information technology in production, my company promotes digital transformation in product consumption. We have promoted bringing products to digital platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, Shopee... to make it easier to reach customers, minimize costs and human resources in introducing, promoting and selling products. When we know how to use digital technology platforms in production, business, promotion and product introduction, it will be more convenient and successful in the process of starting a business", Ms. Xuyen shared.

Sharing about her plans for the near future, Ms. Xuyen said that there are 3 important things she has set for herself: focusing on strong development to bring cordyceps, aloe vera, and herbal tea products to OCOP standards; expanding the factory to meet HACCP standards (a system for identifying, evaluating, and controlling food safety hazards), putting it into a closed production process to improve output quality; expanding the system of collaborators nationwide to expand the market.
