Achievements 50 years after national reunification: Issues and directions for the development of Bac Lieu literature and art

Together, let's clarify and highlight the achievements of literature and art over the past 50 years of a land rich in cultural traditions; adequately and correctly assess the limitations, and suggest solutions for Bac Lieu's literature and art to continue developing on a new path and with new tasks... With these goals, the workshop "Achievements 50 years after the country's reunification: Issues and orientations for the development of Bac Lieu's literature and art" with many passionate presentations has opened up a panoramic view of Bac Lieu's literature and art over the past half century.

"LAND SPIRIT" FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURE AND ARTS

Together with the artists of the whole country, Bac Lieu artists have always devoted themselves to creating "brainchildren" to enrich the cultural life of the people; contributing to sketching a brilliant and increasingly colorful image of Bac Lieu's culture and art over the past 50 years. From there, contributing to encouraging and praising new factors to create a solid foundation for the development of the homeland, making the cultural image of Bac Lieu spread.

However, first of all, we must look at the factors that initiated the development of culture and arts. Since ancient times, Bac Lieu has been known as a land rich in cultural traditions. Bac Lieu may not be a rich province, but its cultural content has been rich since its early days with its cultural traditions: it is the "cradle" of the art of Don ca tai tu, the land of the Bac Lieu Prince, the province of salt, the province of rice, the capital of shrimp, the place where the song "Da co hoai lang" has been resounding for more than a hundred years, and there are also the melodies of Cheo ghe, Ly con sao, Noi tho Bac Lieu...

This land is also home to three ethnic groups Kinh - Khmer - Hoa with their own unique cultural and artistic heritage, creating a rich cultural and artistic identity on this land.

ACHIEVEMENTS FROM THE CULTURE AND ART FRONT

Directives and resolutions orienting the development of culture and arts as well as many policies to care for artists are timely support for the culture and arts front to achieve more and more achievements.

In Bac Lieu, the directions to support culture and arts were analyzed in depth in the opening speech of journalist Vu Thong Nhat - former Vice President of the Writers' Association of Can Tho City: "The role of former Secretary of Bac Lieu Provincial Party Committee Vo Van Dung in the cause of promoting cultural development as a driving force for culture and arts to develop in Bac Lieu". The speech analyzed: "Putting culture in the central position, people as the subject not only demonstrates innovative thinking, dynamism, and sensitivity but also shows the strategic vision and political mettle of the head of the Party Committee... Bac Lieu has correctly identified, followed the right path and taken the right lead, the right viewpoint "Culture is the spiritual foundation of society, the goal and driving force for sustainable development of the country. “Culture must be placed on par with economics, politics and society” (Resolution of the 11th Party Central Committee). This policy not only has a profound impact on the fields of culture, arts and culture but also contributes to promoting strong local economic and tourism development…”.

The speech of Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh - former Vice President of the Union of Literature and Arts Associations of Bac Lieu, Editor-in-Chief of Bac Lieu Culture and Arts Magazine is a beautiful memoir about the formation and development process of Bac Lieu Culture and Arts Magazine. From the "cradle" of Lua Vang Literature and Arts Magazine since 1960, then Minh Hai Literature and Arts Magazine, Ca Mau Peninsula Special Edition, Da Co Hoai Lang Magazine, shaping and developing until today is Bac Lieu Culture and Arts, since 2014. From this roof, many writers, poets, journalists, and researchers have worked together to create rich and diverse writings and life pages in all fields of culture and arts, contributing to brightening the face of the homeland through the lens of culture and arts over the past 50 years.

The discussion of the Literature Association (written by Writer Phan Trung Nghia - Chairman of the Association) analyzed: “In the 50 years of Bac Lieu Literature and Arts movement, the period 2010 - 2015 was the period when Bac Lieu Provincial Party Committee proposed policies and guidelines to promote cultural development, taking culture as a resource for development. From here, Literature and Arts seemed to encounter a new vitality from a new source of nutrition, so it developed with a new spirit, a new form that was very healthy, strong and achieved many results... That is why Literature and Arts in this period developed brilliantly”. The core issue that the discussion of the Bac Lieu Literature Association raised was: Bac Lieu is a land rich in culture and Bac Lieu has known how to mobilize culture as a resource, creating its own strength. That is not only a vivid and concrete practice that makes Literature and Arts develop but also a valuable practice of Bac Lieu in the movement for development in the future.

AND THE PROBLEMS RAISED

Reviewing the past achievements of the Culture - Arts Magazine, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh also suggested a solution: The magazine should maximize its role as a place to unite and gather artists and writers, who understand the Party and State's guidelines and policies and, through the lens of culture and arts, help them enter life in a more understandable and sympathetic way. It is necessary to create an atmosphere where comrades and colleagues respect each other and encourage each other to create. And another urgent requirement is to have good works for culture and arts in the coming time and focus on talented authors.

Bac Lieu needs to have a provincial council of cultural and artistic theory and criticism, because theoretical and critical work is extremely important. This is a very important issue in the upcoming cultural and artistic development strategy that many papers have mentioned.

Dr. Tran Manh Hung - former Vice Principal of Bac Lieu University, analyzed the current situation: Minh Hai province's culture and arts from 1975 to present do not have many works of great appeal, works that crystallize the breakthrough in artistic exploration and the lingering concerns of great magnitude, rich in generalization about life and people here while in reality life does not lack materials for artists to create; the team of artists does not have many specialized authors, besides there is a lack of critical theory, so training a team in this field is an urgent requirement set by local culture and arts managers.

A comprehensive view of the whole picture of culture and arts over the past 50 years, Chairman of the Union of Culture and Arts Associations of Bac Lieu - Do Ngoc An said that Bac Lieu culture and arts have been operating in a space, a historical cultural environment and a caring hand of the Party and the State. That is the premise, the solid foundation that creates inspiration to awaken all creative potential of artists. That is why Bac Lieu culture and arts have operated, smoothly with a healthy form, flourished over the past 50 years, steadfast with the goals and ideals of the Party: contributing to the supreme interests of the socialist Fatherland, strongly accompanying the nation, and the homeland of Bac Lieu.

Resolution 33 of the 11th Central Executive Committee on “building Vietnamese culture and people to meet the country’s development requirements” has pointed out the role and tasks of culture, arts and artists on the ideological front, contributing to building the soul and personality of people. That is the upcoming task of Bac Lieu culture and arts. And the dissections from the past 50 years with outstanding achievements and limitations frankly pointed out will be the basis for culture and arts to look back at themselves to continue the journey ahead with more brilliant marks.
