The first prototype of the Verto Tower began operating on August 26, 2022, in Sunder Nursery Park, New Delhi. German company Studio Symbiosis shared new footage of the tower on May 9.
The name Verto comes from the Latin word for "to turn". The tower is equipped with energy-saving fans that draw in ambient air. The air is then cleaned through filters that remove fine dust particles (PM 2.5, PM 10).
Studio Symbiosis designed the Verto using aerodynamic principles, creating a structure with maximum surface area and increasing wind speed for good performance. "We conducted simulation studies to achieve minimum drag and maximum surface area, which ultimately resulted in this optimal design," the team at the company said.
"We started with an ellipse, which provides minimal drag. We further developed it by twisting the structure to guide the wind along the surface of the tower in the Z-axis direction, which significantly increases the surface area. The twisting structure was further developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to ensure that the clean air does not mix with the unfiltered air being drawn into the tower. Part of the CFD analysis was to ensure a 360-degree filtration area and maximize the amount of filtered air," the team wrote.
In addition to the spiral structure, Studio Symbiosis also developed triangular cells for Verto. The cells taper inwards to create wind compression, increasing the amount of air pushed in. Verto can be shipped flat, then easily assembled on site thanks to the modular structure of glass-fiber reinforced concrete (GRC) panels.
The air purification tower is also equipped with a control system that allows the columns to be adjusted according to current air quality and demand. Sensors on the outside of the tower record air and weather data, which is then collected and evaluated by experts. "This technology has been around since 2018, and has been successfully deployed by German authorities to tackle pollution on some of the most polluted rural traffic routes in order to maintain strict EU regulations," Studio Symbiosis said.
