DTO - With the goal of developing sustainable agriculture , increasing the value of rice grains and adapting to climate change, Thap Muoi commune, Dong Thap province is making efforts to take the lead in implementing the "Project for sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030".
Harvesting rice at the pilot model of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation in Lang Bien commune (old) - now My Quy commune
Currently, Thap Muoi commune has achieved remarkable results, affirming its position as one of the leading localities in the transformation of the rice industry.
Thap Muoi is a pioneer in applying a pilot model of high-quality, low-emission rice cultivation. The model was first deployed in the autumn-winter crop of 2024 (June 2024) at Thang Loi Cooperative (former Lang Bien commune). Up to now, after 3 consecutive crop seasons (autumn-winter 2024, winter-spring 2024 - 2025 and summer-autumn 2025), the model has shown positive results.
Specifically, the model not only brings higher profits from 4,977,700 - 7,050,000 VND/ha but also reduces production costs from 2,057,000 - 2,816,000 VND/ha, reducing prices from 525 - 832 VND/kg compared to traditional farming. In particular, not burning straw after harvest and selling straw has helped farmers increase their income by 400,000 VND/ha, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 3.13 - 4.92 tons CO2e/ha/crop.
In addition, the model was also implemented at My Nam 2 Cooperative Group, My Quy Commune (100ha) in the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, showing outstanding efficiency. Farmers were supported with 50% of the cost of essential materials such as seeds, fertilizers, Trichoderma to decompose straw, along with the application of mechanization technology (aerodynamic cluster/row seeding machine, Drone spraying). As a result, production costs decreased by 4,386,200 VND/ha, total revenue increased by 2,540,000 VND/ha, leading to higher profits of 6,926,200 VND/ha, an increase of 47.6% compared to the control field.
Based on the effectiveness of the models, in 2025, the locality plans to deploy 16 models with a total area of 1,705 hectares, focusing on supporting materials, applying mechanization and VietGAP certification, and tracing product origin. Along with expanding the area, investment in upgrading infrastructure in specialized areas is also focused. Thap Muoi is reviewing the construction needs of works under the Project to register for WB loans, aiming for a synchronous and modern irrigation and transportation system, effectively serving agricultural production.
Drone spraying in high-quality, low-emission rice fields
In particular, Thap Muoi commune has identified promoting linkages in production and consumption of agricultural products as a key, continuous program. In the first 6 months of 2025, the total area of linked rice consumption reached 17,985.2 hectares. It is estimated that in 2025, the linked area will reach 30% of the total sown area. Many large enterprises have joined the linkage, creating stable output for Thap Muoi rice, including: Vietnam Rice Company Limited (Vinarice), Loc Troi Group Joint Stock Company, Hieu Nhan Company Limited...
Despite many initial achievements, Thap Muoi still faces a number of challenges such as: low straw collection rate, lack of large straw storage, low consumption linkage rate and lack of investment capital for mechanization. To overcome these limitations, Thap Muoi commune proposed that the province continue to provide financial support, build incentive mechanisms for businesses, enhance research and application of high technology, and support the development of logistics systems.
By the end of 2025, Thap Muoi will set specific directions: continue to promote the benefits of high-quality specialized rice areas associated with green growth; guide the production of safe, organic agricultural products, according to VietGAP, SRP standards and traceability; invest in infrastructure, especially irrigation systems and support cooperatives and cooperative groups to call for business cooperation, ensure the supply of input materials and product consumption.
With the concerted efforts from the government to the farmers, Thap Muoi is gradually realizing the goal of the 1 million hectare rice project, not only contributing to improving the lives of farmers but also building a modern, sustainable agriculture, contributing to affirming the Vietnamese rice brand in the international market.
