It was a similar situation to how Chelsea suffered in the capital derby the day before against West Ham but Arsenal avoided a collapse, fortunately taking the lead from the penalty spot while Crystal Palace failed to convert a single chance in front of the Arsenal goal in this match.
Takehiro Tomiyasu received consecutive yellow cards in a few minutes and had to leave the field.
Winning all 3 points, coach Mikel Arteta was really unhappy when defender Takehiro Tomiyasu was given two consecutive yellow cards within a few minutes, putting Arsenal in an awkward position when they had to play with one less player for the last 30 minutes of the match.
The Spanish coach sarcastically said about the referee after the match: "Selhurst Park has always been a difficult place to go. We played well when we had 11 players on the field but there was absolutely no plan for having to play with 10 men for so long. The whole team played very well and about Tomiyasu's red card, I will not comment. The job of a coach in the Premier League seems too difficult when every team has to prepare mentally for a 100-minute match with only 10, or 9 or even 8 players on the field. I'm not sure if there will be an 8v8 match but if there is, the entertainment will be very high!".
Coach Mikel Arteta received a yellow card for reacting to the fourth referee
In the match between Crystal Palace and Arsenal, referee David Coote issued four yellow cards and one red card despite the lack of malicious contact. Tomiyasu's two yellow cards came from a situation where he was caught wasting time by holding the ball for about eight seconds to prepare for a throw-in and a fairly normal collision in the middle of the field. The ball was not malicious and even if Ayew had escaped, it would not have been a dangerous counter-attack by the home team.
Crystal Palace fans laugh as Tomiyasu is sent off
The refereeing issue was the highlight of the match at Selhurst Park, the latest match of the second round of the Premier League. Arsenal took the initiative because the home team suddenly "ceded" the game and the visitors' attacks of course could not penetrate Palace's solid defense.
Eddie Nketiah and the situation where the ball hit the crossbar
There were quite a few chances created in the first half and Arsenal unfortunately missed them all. It was not until the second half that the visitors' efforts were rewarded. In the 51st minute, Palace's defense made a momentary mistake and goalkeeper Johnstone had to foul Nketiah in the penalty area. Martin Odegaard did not miss the opportunity to open the scoring from the penalty spot.
Goalkeeper Johnstone fouled Nketiah...
... and Martin Odegaard scored the only goal from the penalty spot
Just when Arsenal were playing very enthusiastically, Tomiyasu unexpectedly received 2 yellow cards in just a few minutes and was sent off. Short of players, Arsenal had to retreat to defense. Crystal Palace attacked but to no avail.
Arsenal's defense worked hard to maintain the 1-0 score
Maintaining a fragile 1-0 score until the end of the match, Arsenal struggled to gain 3 points against Crystal Palace, becoming 1 of 3 teams to maintain a perfect record after 2 rounds along with Brighton and Man City. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace dropped to 11th place on the rankings, right above Man United thanks to a better goal difference (-1 and 0).
