Traditional rowing is not Hien Nam's forte. For nearly 10 years, he has been pursuing canoeing. At the 31st SEA Games, the Ta Rieng boy won 2 gold medals in canoeing in the C2-1000 and C4-1000 categories. However, at the 32nd SEA Games, canoeing was not included in the competition program. Recognizing Hien Nam's qualities, the coaching staff chose him to compete in traditional rowing.
“The moment I stood on the podium to receive the medal, I was happy because my efforts and hard work had paid off. I was honored and proud to have contributed to the glory of Da Nang sports in particular and Vietnamese sports in general in the regional arena. The 32nd SEA Games was truly memorable as it was the first time I competed in traditional rowing. In the future, I will practice harder to explore my limits, determined to win more valuable medals,” Hien Nam said.
Along with Hien Nam, the 32nd SEA Games was a memorable event for Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc when she finished first in the 20km women's race walk with a time of 1 hour 55 minutes 01 seconds. The athlete born in 1990 has shown her overwhelming level over her opponents in the Southeast Asian region over the past years. The gold medal in Cambodia is the 5th Southeast Asian Games gold medal in Thanh Phuc's career after 4 previous times in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2022.
“The 32nd SEA Games was one of the most difficult tournaments as athletes had to compete in hot weather conditions. However, I am happy to have successfully defended my gold medal. After the 32nd SEA Games ended, I returned home to continue training. My goal is to do my best to win a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics,” Thanh Phuc confided.
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports Nguyen Trong Thao, with 8 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 5 bronze medals, the 32nd SEA Games is one of the most successful sports events in the city. In addition to the attention of the city's leaders and coaches, these achievements are also due to the solidarity, efforts in training and determined competition of all athletes. The valuable gold medals are the motivation for athletes to continue to strive, aiming for bigger playgrounds. The city will promptly commend and reward coaches and athletes to achieve high results.
