Two more cases have worsened.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên28/05/2023

On May 28th, Mr. Thai Dinh Lam, Deputy Director of Nghe An Lung Hospital, stated that two patients working at Chau Tien Co., Ltd. (located in Nam Cam Industrial Park, Nghi Loc District, Nghe An Province) are currently being treated at the hospital. One patient requires oxygen and is in weak condition, while the other has developed pneumoconiosis that has progressed to tuberculosis. Three other patients are receiving treatment at home.

According to our investigation, among the 8 workers who contracted pneumoconiosis at Chau Tien Co., Ltd. (3 of whom have died), 4 of them are relatives (1 of whom has died).

Suffering from illness

At Nghe An Lung Hospital, for many months now, Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh (46 years old, residing in Nghi Hung commune, Nghi Loc district) has had to be present at the hospital regularly to take care of her husband, Mr. Hoang Van Son (47 years old, a patient suffering from pneumoconiosis).

Ms. Binh said that Mr. Son has been hospitalized at Nghe An Lung Hospital for nearly a year now.

Mr. Son is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

According to Ms. Binh, Mr. Son started working at Chau Tien Co., Ltd. (a company specializing in the production of limestone powder) in 2019, mainly mixing and packaging limestone powder. In June 2022, Mr. Son's health suddenly deteriorated, and he experienced difficulty breathing, so he went to Nghe An Lung Hospital for examination and was diagnosed with pneumoconiosis.

After a period of treatment in Nghe An, Ms. Binh took her husband to the Central Lung Hospital for examination, hoping for lung lavage, but the doctors informed her that Mr. Son had a thick layer of dust in his lungs, and his condition had worsened to the point where lung lavage was not possible.

The family belongs to the near-poverty category, and Mr. Son is the breadwinner. Now, he is ill, and the monthly treatment costs a lot of money, making life even more difficult for his family.

Ms. Binh said that while working at the factory, Mr. Son was frequently exposed to dust and dirt, but his personal protective equipment was inadequate. "I asked him why he wasn't wearing a mask, and he said the company didn't provide one. Every time he went to work, I prepared many masks for him, yet he still contracted this terrible disease," Ms. Binh sadly recounted.

In a similar situation, Tran Ngoc Hoa (46 years old, residing in Nghi Hung commune, Nghi Loc district), whose pneumoconiosis has progressed to tuberculosis, has difficulty walking and has to rely on his wife, Bui Thi Huong, for care.

Ms. Huong said that Mr. Hoa had been working at the stone powder processing plant of Chau Tien Co., Ltd. since 2017. At the end of 2021, when he noticed his health deteriorating and he was coughing a lot, Mr. Hoa went to the hospital for examination and was found to have pneumoconiosis.

Mr. Hoa went to Hanoi for treatment, including lung lavage, but had to return because his condition had become too severe to undergo the procedure.

Ms. Huong is taking care of her husband at the hospital.

Since Mr. Hoa fell ill, Ms. Huong has had to go to the hospital to take care of her husband, and her three young children (one of whom is sick) have had to be looked after by relatives.

Among the eight workers suffering from pneumoconiosis, the youngest is Pham Quang Son (28 years old, residing in Nghi Thuan commune, Nghi Loc district). Mr. Son is currently receiving treatment at home.

Comprehensive factory inspection

Mr. Bui Dinh Long, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghe An province, has just signed a decision to establish an inter-agency inspection team to inspect Chau Tien Co., Ltd. after 8 workers at this stone powder processing plant contracted pneumoconiosis, including 3 who have died.

The People's Committee of Nghe An province has directed an inter-agency inspection team to investigate occupational diseases, inspect the working environment, and implement social insurance policies for workers at Chau Tien Co., Ltd., with a maximum inspection period of 45 days.

Chau Tien Company Limited currently has 33 employees.

Mr. Le Tien Tri, Head of the Management Board of the Southeast Economic Zone (Nghe An), said that the inter-agency inspection team had inspected Chau Tien Co., Ltd. and the results are not yet available.

Previously, the Southeast Economic Zone Management Board held a working session with the leaders of Chau Tien Co., Ltd., with the participation of relevant departments and agencies.

At this meeting, representatives from the participating agencies unanimously agreed to request Chau Tien Co., Ltd. to visit and encourage the 8 families of workers suffering from pneumoconiosis, conduct workplace environmental monitoring, review the list of employees subject to mandatory social insurance, and immediately implement the payment of insurance for these employees.
