Duong Minh Chau District Medical Center received 6 cases of poisoning after eating wild mushrooms.
Accordingly, all 6 cases reside in Phuoc Ninh commune (Duong Minh Chau district), and were taken to the district medical center on June 3, 6 and 7 for emergency treatment with vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and headache. Currently, 2 people have been discharged from the hospital, 4 people are still being monitored and treated.
Talking to reporters at the district health center, all four patients said they had gone into the forest to pick chicken and goose egg mushrooms to eat. During the picking process, there were a few types of black-gray mushrooms (unknown name, similar in shape to charcoal mushrooms) mixed in, so they brought them home to cook for their family and friends to eat.
Currently, the health condition of the patients is stable, 2 cases have been discharged from the hospital.
Ms. Ho Thi, Kim Thoa (born in 1988) recounted that on June 6, she went to Duong Minh Chau Historical Forest to pick chicken egg mushrooms, goose egg mushrooms and some black mushrooms to cook porridge for about 5-6 people (friends and relatives). Because mushrooms are her favorite food, she ate them twice a day (the first time at 4 p.m., the second time at 8 p.m. the same day).
At around 1am on June 7, she showed signs of vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, and diarrhea many times, and her family took her to the district health center for emergency care. Currently, Ms. Thoa is still tired, vomiting, and needs IV fluids. “During the rainy season, I often go into the forest to pick mushrooms.
At first, I saw a black mushroom and thought it was ash mushroom, so I picked it, washed it, and cooked porridge to invite friends and relatives to eat. I didn't think it would turn out like this. Luckily, the people who ate with me didn't have the same symptoms as me," said Ms. Thoa.
The rainy season is also the season for mushrooms to grow, including chicken egg mushrooms and goose egg mushrooms.
Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hien - Vice Chairman of Duong Minh Chau District People's Committee said that after the incident of 3 people in the same family in Tan Bien district picking mushrooms in the forest to eat and having to be hospitalized due to poisoning (one person died), on June 8, the District People's Committee issued Official Dispatch No. 857/UBND to the District Health Center, the Center for Culture, Sports and Broadcasting, departments, agencies, unions, communes and towns on strengthening propaganda to prevent and combat mushroom poisoning among the people.
While picking mushrooms, the patients mistakenly picked an unknown type of mushroom, thinking it was charcoal mushroom, so they brought it home to eat.
According to Ms. Tran Thi Ngoc Nuong - Head of the provincial Food Safety Department, the unit is currently checking and confirming information about suspected cases of poisoning due to eating wild mushrooms.
On June 7, Tay Ninh Newspaper reported that 3 people, Mr. Cao Huy H (born in 1980), Ms. Khuu Thi Hong T (born in 1979) and her niece Cao Thi Cam Q (born in 2006), who are members of the same family in Tan Bien district, were poisoned after eating wild mushrooms. After intensive treatment at Tay Ninh General Hospital, all 3 patients were transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for treatment. One patient had a worsening condition, multiple organ failure, blood clotting disorder, and acute liver and kidney damage. The patient was diagnosed with critical mushroom poisoning and was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City and died at the hospital.
According to information from the Department of Tropical Medicine at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, after being transferred to the hospital, the two patients with mushroom poisoning received blood filtration and oxygen therapy.
