Almost all the streets and houses in the town of Nördlingen are covered with natural diamonds thanks to an interesting phenomenon that occurred 15 million years ago. According to estimates by geologists, 72,000 tons of diamonds created the town of Nördlingen.

Nördlingen is a town of about 20,000 people located in the province of Bavaria, Germany. From the outside, Nördlingen looks like many other southern German towns, but it has a very special feature: it "hides" up to 72,000 tons of diamonds everywhere.

The town has a population of about 20,000. The first inhabitants arrived in Nördlingen around 898 AD. At that time, they had no idea that they were living in a land full of diamonds.

According to research by archaeologists and astronomers, the diamonds in this town are the result of a meteorite that hit the area about 15 million years ago. This collision created the Ries crater, which is nearly 24 km in diameter and about 100m to 150m deep. This event created millions of microscopic diamonds scattered all over this land.

In addition, this land also forms a type of coarse-grained rock, crushed rock called suevite including glass, crystal and diamond.

The settlers used the available suevite stone to build the town. That is why every ancient building here from churches, houses to libraries, walkways are covered with diamonds without anyone even knowing at first.

Natural diamonds in suevite are extremely small, only less than 0.2mm in size, so they are almost invisible to the naked eye.

This interesting feature has made the town of Nördlingen a popular tourist destination. Visitors from all over the world are eager to walk on priceless diamonds, even if they cannot see them.

According to estimates by geologists, 72,000 tons of diamonds make up the town of Nördlingen and St Georgs Church alone - the most famous tourist attraction in the centre - contains approximately 5,000 carats.

Although living in a town covered in diamonds or one could say living on a “diamond mine”, the people here do not see anything strange, they feel normal. In addition, the diamonds are all super small in size so people do not worry about theft.
