The meatballs were created by Australian cultured meat company Vow, which promises it's no April Fool's joke, calling it a more sustainable alternative to real meat.

“We wanted to create something completely different to anything you can get today,” said Tim Noakesmith, founder of Vow, adding that another reason for choosing the mammoth was that scientists believe the animal’s extinction was due to climate change.
James Ryall, Vow's chief science officer, stressed that they are not creating real animals. While creating cultured meat usually means using the blood of a dead calf, Vow has used an alternative, meaning no animals were killed to make the mammoth meatballs.
Vow hopes to put cultured meat on the map in the European Union, a market where such cultured meat is still unregulated.
