Thoai Son proactively prevents diseases in summer and fall

Summer and autumn, with their characteristic hot and humid weather interspersed with sudden rains, are ideal conditions for pathogens to thrive, leading to the risk of disease outbreaks.

Doctor CKII Nguyen Thi Suong, Deputy Director of Thoai Son District Medical Center, said: “As of the end of May 2025, Thoai Son district had 50 cases of dengue fever, an increase of 16 cases over the same period. Of which, 10 cases were under 5 years old, 23 cases were from 5 to 15 years old. The remaining 15 cases were over 15 years old, the youngest age was 15 months, the oldest age was 58 years old. The above cases were all hospitalized at medical facilities in the province.”

In addition to dengue fever, hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is also a very complicated epidemic in Thoai Son. At the end of May, the district recorded 146 cases of HFMD, an increase of 50 cases compared to the same period last year. Notably, the majority of cases are concentrated in the young age group, under 60 months. More specifically, the group under 24 months had 23 cases, the group from 24 to under 60 months accounted for the largest number, with 102 cases. Although accounting for a lower proportion, there were still 122 cases over 60 months of age with the disease, with the youngest patient being 11 months and the oldest being 13 years old.

People's awareness of disease prevention plays an important role.

Faced with the complicated developments of the epidemic, people's awareness of prevention plays an extremely important role. Many people in Thoai Son district have been proactive and responsible in protecting their family's health. Ms. Duong Thi Ha (Oc Eo town, Thoai Son district) shared her experience of disease prevention at home: "Here, the mountainous area is dense with trees, although the hamlet officials have cleared the land, the family is very careful, letting the grandchildren sleep under mosquito nets. When they see water jars, they regularly rinse them and collect and throw away used bottles. I think disease prevention is still the best way to protect the health of our children and grandchildren."

Small but regular actions, such as: Clearing bushes, cleaning up stagnant water, sleeping under mosquito nets have contributed significantly to preventing Aedes mosquitoes - the intermediate vector of dengue fever. Sharing the same opinion, Mr. Nguyen Van Pho (Dinh My commune, Thoai Son district) expressed: "I have several young grandchildren at home, so I am very afraid of dengue fever and hand and foot diseases. My family prevents the disease by having the children wash their hands with soap before eating and after going to the toilet, cleaning toys every day, keeping the house clean, covering jars, trimming trees around the house, and clearing them clean, then I can feel secure."

In the context of hot summer alternating with heavy rain, pathogens develop strongly, the risk of dengue fever, hand and foot diarrhea and digestive disorders, such as acute diarrhea, is likely to increase in the coming time. To proactively prevent and combat the above diseases, Dr. Nguyen Thi Suong, CKII, made important recommendations, such as: The unit proactively prepares a base of mosquito-killing chemicals, develops an environmental sanitation plan to actively kill mosquito larvae in key areas, residential areas, and old dengue fever outbreaks. At the same time, strengthen propaganda and mobilize people to clean the landscape, clean up water containers, and cover rainwater tanks to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.

For hand-foot-mouth disease, parents need to take the following measures: Washing hands regularly with soap is the most important measure. Washing hands after going to the toilet, before eating and after contact with public surfaces or sick people. Clean personal items and children's toys, especially those that children often put in their mouths. Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as: tables, chairs, floors... Finally, the most important thing is that when there are symptoms of suspected dengue fever, hand-foot-mouth disease, people need to go to a medical facility immediately for examination and timely treatment advice. Self-treatment at home can cause dangerous complications, affecting health and life.
