Oil prices continued to rise on Wednesday as investors bet on the possibility of a trade deal between the United States and India. Both major oil benchmarks rose about 2% in the session, marking a second straight day of gains.

Specifically, Brent oil price increased by 1.19 USD, equivalent to 1.9%, to 62.51 USD/barrel. Meanwhile, US WTI oil price increased by 1.24 USD, equivalent to 2.2%, reaching 58.48 USD/barrel.

Analysts said the rally was driven by news that India could cut oil imports from Russia, increasing demand for other sources.

Oil prices rose after reports that the US and India are close to finalizing a major trade deal, according to MUFG analyst Soojin Kim.

US President Donald Trump said he spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who pledged to limit oil imports from Russia.

India's Mint newspaper revealed that the two countries are close to signing a deal that will reduce import duties on US goods to 15-16% from the previous 50%. If approved, the deal will expand trade opportunities and boost oil prices in the international market.

In addition to the US-India trade developments, investors are also watching the negotiations between the US and China. Officials from both countries are expected to meet in Malaysia this week to continue discussions. President Trump expressed hope that a fair deal will be reached soon with President Xi Jinping.

However, uncertainty remained as a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was postponed, raising concerns about disruptions to global oil supplies.

In addition, Western countries continue to pressure Asian countries to reduce purchases of Russian oil, further causing volatility in the oil price market.

Another support for oil prices came from positive information on energy inventories in the US. According to the American Petroleum Institute (API), crude oil, gasoline and distillate fuels all fell last week.

The US Department of Energy also announced plans to buy back 1 million barrels of oil to add to the strategic reserve, taking advantage of the relatively low oil price to increase national reserves.
