Collecting old batteries: Environmental protection activities

Việt NamViệt Nam05/07/2024

Previously, every time she had an old battery, Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Hong, in Coc Leu Ward, Lao Cai City, often had the habit of throwing it in the trash like other types of trash. When she learned that there was a collection point in Lao Cai City, she kept the old battery to bring it there.

According to Ms. Hong, this activity helps people realize that disposing of batteries into the environment will cause pollution. "When bringing batteries to the collection point, every 10 batteries will be exchanged for 1 cup of water, when taking a photo to share this program, you will receive an additional gift. I think this is a very meaningful activity, everyone should support this," Ms. Hong added.

Ms. Anh Hong brings old batteries to the collection point at SOJO Lao Cai Hotel.

The old battery collection campaign has been implemented by SOJO hotel Lao Cai since mid-June. Every Sunday, the hotel will exchange batteries for gifts. Since the beginning of the campaign, the hotel has received more than 500 used batteries brought by people.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Lien, in Coc Leu ward, said: "I think it's great to have a collection point like this. I will ask them to collect and process toxic items for me."

Ms. Ho Thai Kim Oanh, representative of SOJO hotel Lao Cai, added: "After being collected, the batteries will be stored by the restaurant department, then handed over to the specialized department for proper storage. When the time comes for the hazardous waste collection supplier to come, they will be collected together with the hotel's other waste."

The old battery collection model should be encouraged to be replicated in the province.

It is estimated that an old battery, if not treated scientifically and burned or buried, can pollute 500 liters of water or 1 cubic meter of land within 50 years. Therefore, each battery, whether large or small, many or few, needs to be treated properly to contribute to protecting the living environment. Meaningful battery collection models as mentioned above should be encouraged to be replicated in the province.
