Letter from Germany: Surprisingly, the English team survived.

No farewell words are sufficient or convincing enough to alleviate the sadness felt by the participating teams and fans for their national football team, especially after witnessing the joy of the two finalists and the champion.

The author watched a match at Euro 2024.

That's football for you, very harsh, and sadly, there's no magic that can make the farewell a happy one. And the fans leave, and the pubs and beer gardens in the host cities also mourn along with them.

For German fans, it doesn't matter whether Spain or England wins, even though some tabloids suggest there was some kind of rigged outcome for these two teams to reach the final, following questionable decisions by both the main referee and the VAR team. For example, England was awarded a penalty in the semi-final against the Netherlands; while Spain was denied a penalty after Marc Cucurella's handball in the quarter-final against Germany.

In the minds of many German fans, they couldn't have imagined that the English team could survive so long and stay in the tournament until the very last day, despite displaying a very lackluster style of play until the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, although resentful of English referee Anthony Taylor's decision to ignore Cucurella's handball, they had to objectively admit that the Spanish team fully deserved to reach the final.

No farewell can adequately and convincingly alleviate the current sadness of the participating teams and fans, but what they showed and delivered throughout the tournament was a perfect example of football's beauty. The European climate in mid-July has begun to cool down, and so have people's hearts.
