New York City is famous for its two stock markets: the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) which is more public and NASDAQ - which specializes in listing high-tech and information technology stocks.
The NYSE and NASDAQ are larger in market capitalization than all other stock exchanges in the world. As of January, the market capitalization of companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges accounted for 42% of the global total.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh rings the opening bell at the NYSE.
One of the most prominent features of the NYSE on financial news is the loud bell, which signals the opening or closing of the world's largest stock exchange.
According to the NYSE, ringing the bell is not only a colorful tradition but also very important to the operation of the market, ensuring that no trading takes place before the opening (9:30 a.m.) or after the closing (4 p.m.).
The NYSE began inviting special guests to ring the closing bell in 1995. Previously, ringing the bell was the responsibility of the floor manager.
Previously, in May 2022, during a working trip to the US, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also visited and knocked the gavel to end the trading session at NYSE.
Below are photos of the Prime Minister visiting and working at NYSE on the morning of September 21:
