Mr. Gerald Vanenburg was stripped of the right to lead U23 Indonesia at the 2025 SEA Games, after a 0-1 defeat to U23 Vietnam in the final match of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 on the evening of July 29.
The information about not continuing to lead the team at the 2025 SEA Games was confirmed by Mr. Vanenburg himself right after he could not help the "island country" team win the championship. The Dutch strategist will return to lead the Indonesian U23 team in the 2026 U23 Asian qualifiers.
"About the SEA Games, they said it's not my job. I'm assigned to the AFC U23 Championship qualifiers. So I'll try to win there," Vanenburg said at a press conference after the final.
The President of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), Mr. Erick Thohir, also made a similar statement when asked about whether Mr. Vanenburg would continue to be the coach of the U23 Indonesia at the 2025 SEA Games: "We will discuss with the national teams. It is certain that Mr. Gerald will be in charge of the 2026 AFC U23 qualifiers," Mr. Erick said.
The 2026 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers will take place from September 3 to 9, 2025. Indonesia U23 is in Group J with Laos, Macau and South Korea.
Meanwhile, the SEA Games are scheduled to take place from December 3 to 18, 2025, and the draw has not yet been conducted.
