According to Lao Dong, on social networks such as Facebook, TikTok..., there is currently a lot of content related to drinking soft drinks causing kidney failure. Videos and articles posting this content receive great interaction as well as many comments from social network users.
Doctor Huynh Le Anh Tuan (Department of Nephrology - Artificial Kidney, Can Tho Central General Hospital) said that, up to now, according to statistics, the biggest cause leading to kidney failure - especially end-stage kidney failure - is cardiovascular and endocrine diseases, such as diabetes, gout, high blood pressure...
In addition, chronic urinary tract obstruction that cannot be treated gradually leads to kidney failure. A characteristic of Vietnam in particular and developing countries in general is that there is an additional group of diseases called glomerular disease, which is very difficult to determine the cause.
"If we say that bottled water and soft drinks cause kidney failure, it is not entirely accurate, because if this were the case, these types of water would not be circulated on the market. However, soft drinks and bottled water can easily lead to increased blood sugar, leading to diabetes. From that point of view, they can contribute to increasing the number of kidney failure patients" - Dr. Tuan analyzed.
Currently, kidney failure is a public health problem with about 8,000 new cases each year. Particularly at the Department of Nephrology - Artificial Kidney - Can Tho Central General Hospital, recently it has always been overloaded when receiving patients for examination, as well as emergency treatment/dialysis.
"Previously, chronic kidney disease was often considered a disease of the elderly, over time and other diseases, the function of organs in the body declines. However, recently, chronic kidney disease has been showing a tendency to become younger.
Statistics show that in the first 6 months of this year, the rate of people under 40 years old hospitalized with a diagnosis of chronic kidney failure accounted for 15%," Dr. Tuan added.
