Must create a colostomy
Recently, Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City has just received the case of Mrs. PTM (54 years old, Binh Thuan) for emergency treatment. The patient said that a few days ago, Mrs. M. and her son went to a colon cleansing facility to lose weight and prevent cancer, at a price of 500,000 VND/time. Mrs. M. said: "The staff of this facility instructed me to lie face down on the bed, insert a tube into my anus and pump water in. Then, they aspirated the fluid."
Ms. M. saw no change in her body, but she had already paid for two enema sessions, so she returned to the facility for a colonic enema after a week. This time, when the staff inserted the tube into her anus, Ms. M. felt more pain.
A day later, she had stomach cramps and took medicine to treat her stomach pain but it did not improve. After 2 days, her stomach pain got worse, accompanied by fever and delirium. Her daughter took her to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for emergency treatment and discovered a perforated colon.

Doctor CKI Dinh Tuan Vinh, ICU department, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that Ms. M. suffered from septic shock due to feces in the colon leaking into the abdomen through a perforation, causing peritonitis, sepsis, hypotension, and metabolic acidosis (a state of acidification of the blood).
Fortunately, the septic shock was detected in time and did not affect liver and kidney function. Dr. Vinh said that if the emergency treatment was delayed by 1 day, Ms. M. could have suffered multiple organ failure (kidney, liver, lungs, heart, etc.); and even died from septic shock.
In Ms. M's case, after the infection is cured, it usually takes about 2 weeks for the patient to be discharged from the hospital but must return to the hospital after a few months for the surgeon to close the colostomy, at which point the patient can return to normal bowel movements through the anus.
Colonic lavage does not prevent cancer
Doctor Dinh Tuan Vinh said that on social networks, there is a trend of colonic enemas to lose weight and cure all diseases, including cancer. Currently, there is no publication or medical research confirming that colonic enemas can lose weight, cure cancer or all diseases.

Colonic enema in medicine is a method of using water, possibly mixed with medicine, to pump back into the anus to the rectum and colon. This method is indicated for some patients with conditions such as: severe constipation, needing to clean the colon to perform procedures, surgery on the colon, rectum...
Colonic lavage should only be performed under a doctor's prescription at a hospital or medical facility licensed by the Ministry of Health , and performed by trained nurses.
Therefore, colonic enemas performed at unlicensed facilities and by untrained staff can cause health hazards to those who use this service, such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, ulcers, strictures, tears or perforations of the colon, causing sepsis, septic shock, multiple organ failure, and even death.
Doctor Dinh Tuan Vinh warns people not to perform colon cleansing at home in any form, to avoid complications that negatively affect health, treatment time and costs. To have peace of mind about their health, people should have a general health check-up at least once a year. This helps resolve health concerns, and at the same time helps prevent and screen for diseases for early treatment.
