
On the afternoon of July 28, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment issued an urgent dispatch requesting Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company to open two surface discharge gates (No. 1 and No. 3) from 4:00 p.m. the same day to bring the upstream water level of the reservoir to an elevation of 56m, ensuring the safety of the project according to the inter-reservoir operation process in the Red River basin.
In the dispatch signed by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep, the ministry stated the reason for opening the water gates simultaneously was because this morning, July 28, the water level upstream of Thac Ba Lake reached 56.21m, the water flow to the lake was at 490m³/second. The total amount of water discharged downstream was 413m³/second.
Along with operating the two water discharge gates, Thac Ba Hydropower Plant is required to closely monitor the developments of rain and floods, water flow, upstream and downstream situations to promptly report to the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention.
After the telegram was issued, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment also sent a dispatch requesting the People's Committees of provinces and cities downstream of Thac Ba Hydropower Plant to promptly notify people, local authorities, aquaculture facilities, water transport, riverside works, etc. to proactively prevent risks due to water discharge; ensure absolute safety for the works and downstream areas during the operation of Thac Ba reservoir.
