On the afternoon of July 28th, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment issued an urgent dispatch requesting Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company to open two surface spillway gates (No. 1 and No. 3) from 4 PM on the same day to bring the upstream water level of the reservoir down to an elevation of 56m, ensuring the safety of the structure according to the inter-reservoir operating procedure on the Red River basin.
In a dispatch signed by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep, the ministry stated that the reason for simultaneously opening the sluice gates was that this morning, July 28th, the upstream water level of Thac Ba reservoir reached 56.21m, and the inflow into the reservoir was 490m³/second. The total amount of water released downstream was 413m³/second.
Along with operating the two spillway gates, Thac Ba hydropower plant is required to closely monitor rainfall and flood developments, water flow, and the situation upstream and downstream to report promptly to the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention.
Following the official dispatch, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment also sent a document requesting the People's Committees of provinces and cities downstream of the Thac Ba hydropower plant to quickly inform the people, local authorities, aquaculture facilities, waterway transport operators, and riverside structures... to proactively prevent risks from water discharge; ensuring absolute safety for the structure and downstream areas during the operation of the Thac Ba reservoir.
