Switzerland extends emergency law on COVID-19 epidemic

Speaking to reporters after the referendum results were announced, MP Lorenz Hess announced on June 19: “With the extension of the law, we continue to assure citizens that the government can act quickly in an emergency to protect public health, especially for the elderly.”

The Swiss government lifted its anti-epidemic measures last year and fewer people are now seen wearing masks. However, a decision by the Swiss parliament in December to extend the COVID-19 law has sparked controversy.

The Mass-Voll and Amis de la Constitution movements disagree with the need for COVID-19 identification papers and the need to install the SwissCovid contact tracing app, arguing that this threatens privacy and other discriminatory issues.

Therefore, a referendum took place, with the above results, the Swiss Government will continue to have the basis to implement anti-epidemic measures if a new wave occurs. In addition, the law also allows the authorities to take urgent action to protect vulnerable groups.

Speaking to Swiss news agency Keystone-SDA, MP Brigitte Crottaz stressed that the votes reflected the sentiment of the country's people.
