In the early morning of June 9, Cristiano Ronaldo scored the equalizer 2-2, setting the stage for Portugal's 5-3 victory in the penalty shootout in the 2024/25 Nations League final.
Ronaldo and Nuno Mendes scored for Portugal, while Mikel Oyarzabal and Martin Zubimendi scored for Spain. Alvaro Morata was the only player from either team to miss a penalty in the shootout.
According to AS , Portugal are expected to receive 12.75 million euros in prize money. This includes 1.5 million euros for participating in League A, 750,000 euros for finishing first in the group and 10.5 million euros for winning the final.
Meanwhile, the second and third placed teams of the tournament (Spain and France respectively) are expected to receive 8 and 7 million euros in prize money. This figure does not include the achievement money in the previous group stage.
Portugal is the only representative to have won the Nations League twice (2019, 2025), while Spain was crowned in 2023.
For coach Roberto Martinez, this is his first title since taking charge in Portugal. At the same time, this is also Ronaldo's third championship in the national team's shirt, after Euro 2016 and Nations League 2019.
Speaking after the match, Ronaldo said: "I needed to play and gave my all. I went to my limit and contributed to the team with a goal. I am very happy. If I had to break my leg for the team, I would do it."
