With many efforts, up to now, most of the red tangerine areas have been restored and developed well, contributing to improving the economy and increasing farmers' income.

Farmers participate in the Project to preserve red tangerine gardens in the period 2020 - 2024, actively implementing many solutions to restore red tangerines.

Many remarkable results

According to Lai Vung District People's Committee, in the period of 2020 - 2023, the whole district has 348 households registered to participate in the project with 216.74/546.63ha (reaching 39.7%). Of which, the rehabilitated area is about 171/197.71ha (reaching 86.6%); the replanted area is about 45/347.92ha (reaching 13.1%).

To improve the effectiveness of the project, in recent times, Lai Vung District People's Committee has coordinated with provincial departments, branches and experts from institutes and schools to focus on implementing many solutions to support farmers such as: selecting more parent trees; building clean breeding net houses; producing and supplying seeds, organic fertilizers, and Tricodecma fungi to households participating in the project. At the same time, propaganda about the red grapefruit project has been carried out, integrating training and guidance on red grapefruit cultivation techniques...

Participating in the project from the beginning, Mr. Le Minh Man, residing in Tan Phu hamlet, Tan Phuoc commune, has planted 10,000 square meters of red tangerines, including grafted and grafted branches. In the 2024 Tet tangerine crop, Mr. Man's red tangerine garden bore fruit at the beginning of the season, with large, eye-catching fruits, so it sold for a fairly high price. Mr. Man said: "Throughout the cultivation process, I always followed the project's procedures and the instructions of the district's agricultural sector. With 800 grafted tangerine trees and 400 grafted tangerine trees in the garden today, grafted branches grow and develop more strongly than grafted branches."

As one of the first gardeners who is passionate about overcoming diseases on red tangerine trees, Mr. Huynh Van Mi Suol, residing in Tan Quy hamlet, Tan Phuoc commune, is implementing many solutions to quickly revive the 6,000m2 garden area. Mr. Suol shared: “During the project implementation period, I always followed the red tangerine cultivation process proposed by scientists , using self-composted organic fertilizers and biological products, so the tangerine garden has recovered well. Applying organic farming processes, each year, I fertilize with traditional organic fertilizers combined with Trichoderma fungi divided into 3 stages. Currently, the tangerine garden is growing well, the soil is more porous and the cost of agricultural materials has been reduced by 50% compared to before participating in the project.”

Continue to revive the strong plant species

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, through propaganda, farmers are now willing to change from using chemical fertilizers to self-composted organic fertilizers. Most of the land areas implemented under the project have had major changes in a positive direction. This has helped the pink grapefruit gardens to gradually recover, contributing to maintaining the area and increasing the average income for farmers...

Lai Vung District People's Committee continues to focus on disseminating policies and guidelines to encourage gardeners to restore and develop more areas of red tangerine cultivation; focusing on improving the quality and production efficiency of all gardens participating in the project. In particular, continuing to conduct training and guidance on red tangerine cultivation techniques, focusing on 2024 on providing guidance on techniques for flowering and caring for young fruits to contribute to increasing productivity.

In addition, the sectors and levels in Lai Vung district continue to research solutions to fully utilize the remaining quantity of grafted red tangerine seedlings sent back to the Center for High-tech Agricultural Application for care; continue to implement the contract on providing Trichoderma fungi to households participating in the project; assign technical staff to regularly stay close to the area to support gardeners in implementing the technical cultivation process according to the project, especially when preparing to treat the trees for flowering...

Mr. Huynh Van Ton - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Lai Vung district, said: "In 2024, the project strives to complete the goal of preserving over 500 hectares of red tangerines. The red tangerine growing area will be concentrated according to the planning map of the Project "Creating, managing and developing the Lai Vung red tangerine certification label".
