CEO Shou Zi Chew is scheduled to appear on Thursday before U.S. congressional lawmakers, who will question him about the company's data security and privacy practices as well as its relationship with the Chinese government.

Mr Chew said in a TikTok video that the hearing “comes at a critical time” for the company, after lawmakers introduced measures that would allow the government to impose a ban on the app.
“I will be testifying before Congress this week to share everything we are doing to protect Americans using this app,” Chew said.
The TikTok app has come under fire in the US, Europe and Asia- Pacific , where there have been increasing bans on TikTok on government devices over concerns the app poses risks to cybersecurity and data privacy or could be used to promote misinformation.
Norway and the Netherlands on Tuesday warned against installing apps like TikTok on phones issued to government employees, citing security or intelligence agencies.
Norway's Ministry of Justice said there would be a “high risk” if TikTok or Telegram were installed on devices with access to “internal digital infrastructure or services.”
TikTok also released updated rules and standards for content and users in a newly released set of guidelines.
“These principles are based on our commitment to protecting human rights and are consistent with international legal frameworks,” said Julie de Bailliencourt, TikTok’s head of global product policy.
TikTok strives to ensure fairness, protect human dignity, and balance free speech while preventing harm, she said. The guidelines will take effect on April 21.
Among the key changes are additional details on restrictions on deepfakes, also known as synthetic media created using artificial intelligence technology. TikTok is more explicit about its policies, saying that all deepfakes or manipulated content that shows real-life scenes must be labeled so viewers know they are fake or altered in some way.
Deepfakes, or facial impersonations of public figures, are acceptable in certain contexts, such as for artistic or educational content.
