Exports to the US increased by 22%
Talking to the Government E-newspaper about the trade picture between Vietnam and the United States, Mr. Do Ngoc Hung, Commercial Counselor, Head of the Vietnam Trade Office in the United States, said that in the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam's exports to the United States reached 31.4 billion USD, an increase of 22% over the same period, and imports reached 4.1 billion USD, an increase of 21%.
This result shows that the foreign trade structure between Vietnam and the United States is complementary and not directly competitive.
In the context of trade between Vietnam and the United States facing challenges related to tariffs, Mr. Do Ngoc Hung believes that there are still opportunities in challenges. Accordingly, many leading US retail groups such as Walmart, Target (importing 30% of Vietnamese goods), Costco, HomeDepot... still show their support and trust that Vietnam will reach an agreement with the United States, through removing reciprocal tariffs.
"Leading US businesses and distribution corporations are considering attending the event Connecting the International Supply Chain - Vietnam International Sourcing & Ho Chi Minh City Export Forum 2025 taking place in September 2025, co-organized and implemented by the Ministry of Industry and Trade," Mr. Do Ngoc Hung informed, adding that there are many positive signals in the issue of tariff negotiations between the two countries.
Reduce dependence on intermediate raw materials
In the coming time, to promote trade cooperation as well as increase cooperation opportunities between the two countries, Mr. Do Ngoc Hung suggested that we need to strengthen strategic cooperation with the United States to ensure sustainable development in bilateral relations between the two countries, from industry to trade, investment, energy, artificial intelligence... Vietnamese enterprises need to diversify export markets through free trade agreements (FTAs), especially new generation FTAs. Along with that, stimulate domestic demand through measures to promote domestic consumption.
The trade office recommends that businesses themselves need to improve their domestic competitiveness and strengthen exports through investment in improving the overall competitiveness of supporting and foundational industries, upgrading technology, innovation, simplifying business regulations, and improving infrastructure to reduce production costs and improve product quality.
Businesses also need to enhance resilience and diversify supply chains, reducing dependence on concentrated raw materials and intermediate goods in one market. At the same time, promoting exports with domestic intellectual content and added value will contribute to improving the economy 's resilience to external impacts.
Regarding trade defense, Mr. Do Ngoc Hung said that because countries subject to tariffs may increase trade protection measures, it will put greater competitive pressure on the Vietnamese market. Therefore, full cooperation with the US in providing information for trade lawsuits is also important to protect business interests and avoid legal risks.
