According to TechSpot , few people know that on the same day that Whitney Houston's song I Will Always Love You dominated the music charts and the movie Home Alone 2 took the box office by storm (December 3, 1992), a quiet historical event took place, opening a new era for the telecommunications industry, which was the first SMS message being sent.
The first SMS message was sent around Christmas 1992.

Christmas Messages of 1992 That Kickstarted the SMS Era
Neil Papworth, a 22-year-old software engineer, made history when he sent a "Merry Christmas" message from his computer to a colleague's Orbitel 901 phone over Vodafone's GSM network. This was the result of SMS technology, conceived in 1984 by Friedhelm Hillebrand and Bernard Ghillebaert.
"I don't know if they really thought it was going to be something big," Papworth told Sky News , recalling that historic moment.
Then in 1993, Nokia was the first company to integrate SMS functionality into mobile phones, allowing users to send messages directly between two devices. However, it took a few years for SMS to really explode and become a global phenomenon, changing the way people communicate.
By 2010, 193,000 SMS messages were sent worldwide every second. Although SMS is now competing with OTT messaging apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram..., it still plays an important role, especially in areas with limited internet connectivity or in two-factor authentication services.
From the simple "Merry Christmas" greetings of yesteryear, SMS has come a long way, connecting billions of people across the planet.
