USA 3D printed building of nearly 1,000 square feet in Florida was built with a 3D printer and can withstand harsh weather conditions such as extreme heat and storms.

With projects like a 100-home urban community in Austin, Texas, and NASA’s Mars habitat, 3D-printed architecture is taking off in the U.S. Another milestone comes from Printed Farms, which is nearing completion of the world’s largest 3D-printed building. Their project is a 1,000-square-foot luxury horse barn in Florida, New Atlas reported on July 4.
The single-storey structure is 47 metres long, 25 metres wide and 4 metres high. Printed Farms used a 3D printer called BOD2 from COBOD to build the building. This is also the machine used to create the first two-storey 3D printed house in Europe.
Like other 3D printing projects, the construction process involved a sophisticated robot that sprayed a cement-like mixture from a nozzle, forming the walls in layers. The printer wasn’t large enough to build the entire stable at once, so instead it printed in sections, starting with the side of the building and finishing with the middle. The 3D printer took 18 days to complete 3,000 square feet.
Once the 3D printing was complete, builders installed the roof, windows and doors, followed by electrical and plumbing fixtures. The building was designed for local weather conditions, so it could withstand extreme heat and strong winds.
"Located in Wellington, South Florida, the world's largest 3D-printed building can withstand a tropical storm. The flexibility and benefits of 3D printing technology are also demonstrated through the building's walls, which are ventilated to naturally cool the building," said COBOD.
