Governor-General of Australia pays State visit to Vietnam

Australian Governor-General David Hurley arrived in Hanoi on April 3, beginning a state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of President Vo Van Thuong.

The Governor-General of Australia is the first foreign leader to pay a State visit to Vietnam in 2023. Taking place in the year commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Australia diplomatic relations (1973-2023), the visit affirms the importance and desire of the two countries to deepen Vietnam-Australia Strategic Partnership.

Welcoming the delegation at Noi Bai airport, Hanoi were: Head of the Office of the President Le Khanh Hai; Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu; Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Nguyen Tat Thanh; and representatives of a number of relevant agencies.

Joining the delegation accompanying the Governor-General of Australia on a State visit to Vietnam were: Mrs. Linda Hurley; Deputy Assistant to the Governor-General Jeffrey Barnes; Head of the Strategic Cooperation Department Timothy Grainger, the Governor-General's Chief of Staff and assistants, and the Australian Ambassador to Vietnam.

Born on August 26, 1953, in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, Mr. David Hurley graduated with a Bachelor's degree from the Royal Defense Academy (Australia) in 1975 and a Master's degree from the War College (USA) in 1997.

Mr David Hurley joined the Royal Australian Army in January 1972 and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1990.

He was subsequently appointed to the following positions: Colonel, Commander of the 1st Division (June 1994); Military Secretary to the Chief of the Royal Australian Army (December 1997); Brigadier General, Commander of the 1st Brigade in Darwin, Northern Australia (January 1999); Major General, Commander of the Capability Development Section (July 2001); Commander, Head of the Land Development Section (December 2002); Lieutenant General, Commander of the Capability Development Section (December 2003); Commander of Joint Operations (September 2007); Deputy Chief of the General Staff (July 2008) and General, Chief of the General Staff of the Royal Australian Army (July 2011).

In October 2014, he became the 38th Governor of New South Wales, Australia. On July 1, 2019, Mr. David Hurley was sworn in as the 27th Governor-General of Australia.
