The January 2025 report from Ookla recently released shows that mobile network speed in Vietnam has reached a record of 134.19 Mbps, up 54%, from 86.96 Mbps in December 2024. Compared to September 2024, this result has nearly doubled (from 70 Mbps). Thanks to that, Vietnam has increased 15 places, ranking 22nd for the first time in the ranking of countries with the fastest mobile network speed in the world . This position is about 3 Mbps away from the Top 20.
Ookla's chart also shows almost continuous growth in the final months of 2024 - coinciding with the planned deployment of commercial 5G networks in Vietnam. 5G is also the main reason that experts believe has impacted the growth of mobile network speeds in recent times. Since mid-October last year, Vietnam has had its first commercial 5G network operator, significantly improving mobile data connection speeds.

Currently, there are two network operators on the market, Viettel and Vinaphone, that have officially provided commercial 5G and are constantly expanding their infrastructure, optimizing their networks, and launching packages to attract users. MobiFone is expected to enter this market in 2025. According to Viettel's report as of early February 2025, this network operator has 5.5 million 5G users. Meanwhile, Vinaphone, despite being deployed later, quickly gained 3 million users. 5G stations are present in provinces and cities across the country, but are currently mainly concentrated in central areas, densely populated areas, industrial parks, ports, etc.
Not only Vietnam, global mobile network speed according to Ookla's report also recorded fluctuations, increasing by an average of more than 40%, from 62.79 Mbps to 91.24 Mbps. The specific cause has not been announced by the company, but it is likely due to the application of some new calculation methods.
Other countries that have also made significant progress in mobile internet speed include Malaysia (up 9 places to 11th), Brazil from 39th to 6th, and Nigeria improving 23 places. On the contrary, Switzerland and Sweden have dropped 11 and 13 places respectively. Currently, the UAE is still the country with the highest mobile internet speed in the world (545.94 Mbps).
