The night before Republican President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, Mr. Biden gave his final farewell speech from South Carolina, where he won a landslide victory in the 2020 election and became President of the United States.
President Joe Biden spoke to the congregation of the Royal Missionary Baptist Church about his reasons for entering public service and thanked the people of South Carolina for their support.
“I owe you a lot. The struggle to restore the soul of this nation is difficult, but we must remain hopeful. We must always keep faith in a brighter tomorrow,” Mr. Biden emphasized.
Before the ceremony, as hostages in Gaza began to be released under a US-backed ceasefire, President Biden declared: "The guns in Gaza have fallen silent."
The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was an initiative he outlined in May 2024.
“The responsibility for implementing this agreement now lies with the next administration,” he shared.
President Biden said the three hostages released on January 19 were in “good health,” and offered some advice to the Trump administration on how to maintain the difficult deal.
“Success will require perseverance, as well as continued support for regional allies and confidence in diplomatic negotiations coupled with deterrence,” he asserted.
