The White House said US President Joe Biden will travel to Hiroshima, Japan, on May 17 to attend the Group of Seven (G7) summit.
The announcement suggests Mr Biden's trip could still go ahead as planned, despite ongoing negotiations over US government debt.
At a press conference on May 12, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said President Biden confirmed that his plans to attend the G7 summit in Japan have not changed. According to the official, at the summit, Mr. Biden will discuss with his G7 counterparts "a range of the most pressing global issues," including climate change and food security.
According to the previously announced plan, Mr. Biden will attend the G7 Summit in Hiroshima from May 19 to 21. He will then travel to Papua New Guinea to meet with leaders of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) before going to Sydney, Australia, to attend the Quad Summit on May 24.
On May 9, Mr. Biden left open the possibility of canceling his trip to Asia if he fails to resolve the impasse with the Republican Party over the debt ceiling issue that is putting the US at an unprecedented risk of default. Economists warn that a prolonged default could push the US economy into a deep recession with high unemployment, while destabilizing the global financial system that relies on US bonds.
Mr. Biden is currently working to reach an agreement to prevent the risk of the government defaulting before June 1.
