Speaking in the Oval Office on May 23, US President Donald Trump criticized an introductory mathematics course recently launched by Harvard University to support students who still have difficulty with basic algebra.
“This is a place where students can’t do two plus two, and they get into Harvard. They want to take extra math. How do they get into that school? How can someone who can’t add get into Harvard?”, The Hill quoted Mr. Trump as saying.
He also said Harvard would have to change the way it does business, noting that the federal government has funded billions of dollars ineducational programs at the prestigious university.
Previously, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the revocation of Harvard's right to enroll foreign students, accusing the school of "inciting violence, anti-Semitism, and collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party."
Asked about the possibility of resuming the admission of foreign students, Mr. Trump said his administration was “looking at a lot of factors.”
The ban is said to have escalated tensions between President Trump and Harvard - a school that has repeatedly opposed his policies.
The Trump administration has previously cut $3 billion in federal funding, ordered an investigation into teaching practices and threatened to strip the school of its tax-exempt status.
In turn, Harvard has filed a lawsuit against the government over the freeze in funding.
The heir to the Belgian throne could be affected
According to Reuters, Princess Elisabeth (23 years old), the future Queen of the Kingdom of Belgium, is currently studying a two-year master's program in Public Policy at Harvard. The US government's ban on Harvard recruiting foreign students could directly affect her studies.
“Princess Elisabeth has just completed her first year of studies. The implications of the decision (by the Trump administration) will only be clear in the coming days and weeks. We are currently reviewing the situation,” Royal Palace spokeswoman Lore Vandoorne said in a statement.
Princess Elisabeth is the eldest of four children born to King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. Before attending Harvard, she graduated with a degree in history and politics from Oxford University in England.
