Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ruled out holding a presidential election next spring and urged his countrymen to avoid political division.
According to AP, Mr. Zelensky's statement came after growing discussions about the possibility of presidential elections in March 2024. Mr. Zelensky was elected president for a five-year term in March 2019, and had previously avoided making definitive statements on the issue.
According to Mr. Zelensky, Ukraine is currently in a period of conflict, with too many challenges, and holding elections is completely irresponsible. Ukrainian law prohibits elections during martial law (applied since Russia began a special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022). The country will need to amend the law if it decides to hold a vote.

News of the Ukrainian presidential election comes as some Ukrainian military officers say the country's military offensive in Russian-controlled areas of eastern Ukraine is stalling.
