UN Secretary General sends letter on grain deal to Russian President. (Source: Crisis 24) |
As part of ongoing efforts to implement the basic conditions set out in the agreement, the UN Secretary-General has sent an official letter to the Russian President, Mr. Dujarric explained.
The letter mentions proposals to improve the implementation of the memorandum to maintain the Black Sea grain agreement.
According to Mr. Dujarric, the UN Secretary-General emphasized his readiness to cooperate further with Russia in proposals for a grain agreement.
The UN press service stated that Mr. Guterres' letter was related to removing obstacles to money transfers through the Russian Agricultural Bank.
Russia had previously threatened to scrap the grain deal, which is set to expire on July 17.
The Kremlin argues that some of its requests to send Russian grain and fertilizer abroad under the deal with Ukraine have not been met. The last two grain ships under the Black Sea deal are currently loading at the Ukrainian port of Odessa.
One of the key conditions Russia set for extending the grain deal was the West's agreement to reconnect the Russian Agricultural Bank Rosselkhozbank to the SWIFT network.
Previously, this bank was removed from SWIFT by the European Union (EU) in response to Russia's military campaign in Ukraine.
