Ba Son has become an important part of the history of the struggle for independence of Saigon – Ho Chi Minh City. Ba Son is closely associated with the life of President Ton Duc Thang.
From 1863 to 1975, the workers' movement in Ba Son was maintained and developed, and the workers here always showed a spirit of revolutionary struggle. Many actions and strikes took place with political and international significance. Hundreds of Ba Son workers became outstanding cadres of the Party, State and the Vietnam People's Army.
The Nguyen Dynasty in the first half of the 19th century established the Thu Thiem military post to control traffic on the Saigon River and defend the central area. Later, this whole area was called Thu Thiem with Thu Thiem ferry, Thu Thiem Market... The Lovers of the Holy Cross Monastery was established here in 1840 and was named Thu Thiem Monastery; the first church built here in 1859 was named Thu Thiem Church...
In the early 20th century, the phrase "Thu Thiem Ferry" was mentioned most often in folk songs with exploration trips. Writer Son Nam in his research Ben Nghe - Old Saigon once wrote the song: "Young corn grilled on the stove/ I dare anyone to row the Thu Thiem ferry". From the 60s of the 20th century, there was a Thu Thiem ferry operating here until 2011 when it ended when the Saigon River tunnel was built.
