On the evening of October 9, swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang won the 5th gold medal for the Quang Tri swimming team at the 2025 National Swimming Championship. He finished first in the men's 200m butterfly with a time of 2 minutes 1 second 29, thereby affirming his position as number 1 among the national male athletes participating in the competition.
That is because no male athlete won as many gold medals as Nguyen Huy Hoang. Swimmer Pham Thanh Bao of Vinh Long team also won only 3 individual gold medals. Luong Jeremie of Ho Chi Minh City team won only 2 gold medals in 2 events. Tran Hung Nguyen of the Army won only 1 gold medal.
This is the second time in his career participating in national swimming championships that Nguyen Huy Hoang has won 5 gold medals in 5 different events. The last time he reached the highest podium 5 times was at the national swimming championship 5 years ago (2020).
"I'm very happy. In the past, I usually won only 3 to 4 gold medals. This year, I feel lucky," Nguyen Huy Hoang told Tuoi Tre Online .
He continued: "I am regaining my best competitive feeling. This is the tournament where I am preparing to reach my peak performance for the 33rd SEA Games. Although I have not been able to break my own national records in the 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle and 1,500m freestyle, I feel like I am gradually reaching a feeling of fullness."
Nguyen Huy Hoang, born in 2000, is a gold mine for the Vietnamese swimming team at the recent SEA Games and a hope to compete for medals at the ASIAD. At the age of 25, he is still Vietnam's number 1 swimmer in the men's freestyle events.
