Ho Chi Minh City: No worries about shortages or price increases during Lunar New Year 2025

On the afternoon of January 16, at the Ho Chi Minh City Press Center, Deputy Director of the Department of Information and Communications Nguyen Ngoc Hoi chaired a press conference to provide information on socio -economic issues in the city last week.

At the press conference, Mr. Nguyen Minh Hung, Deputy Head of Trade Management Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade provided information on the 2024 Market Stabilization Program and the 2025 Tet market.

According to Mr. Nguyen Minh Hung, the market stabilization program is sustainable, the distribution system is widespread, so price-stabilized goods are being distributed everywhere in Ho Chi Minh City, so people do not worry about shortages or price increases during the 2025 Lunar New Year.

This year, the total number of enterprises participating in the Program to stabilize the market of essential food and foodstuffs in 2024 and Lunar New Year 2025 is 69 enterprises (an increase of 10 enterprises compared to 2023). The suppliers are mostly large-scale enterprises, reputable brands, and have high market share.

Regarding supply preparation, key enterprises participating in the Market Stabilization Program have prepared capital of more than 22,000 billion VND, of which more than 8,000 billion VND is to prepare essential food and foodstuffs to serve the Tet market. Accordingly, the output of essential goods prepared accounts for 25% to 43% of the market share; on average, each month during Tet is expected to supply nearly 8,000 tons of rice, 5,000 tons of livestock meat, 5,500 tons of poultry meat, 23 million poultry eggs, 1,400 tons of sugar, 1,100 tons of cooking oil, 800 tons of processed foods, 10,000 tons of vegetables and fruits...

Currently, businesses are always ready with plans to increase production when necessary and organize mobile sales to handle unusual fluctuations and local shortages if any.

Regarding goods distribution activities, the Department coordinates with the People's Committees of districts, towns and Thu Duc city to deploy many solutions, urge wholesale markets, traditional markets, supermarket systems, and convenience stores to focus on monitoring and grasping the market, estimating demand, preparing supply sources, closely following the situation of goods prices at the source; strictly implementing regulations on price listing, trading goods with clear origin, ensuring food safety...

According to Mr. Nguyen Minh Hung, to ensure the supply of goods in the days before Tet, supermarket systems and convenience stores must increase human resources, increase service capacity, extend operating hours; resolutely not let empty shelves occur, and not let customers shopping for Tet be congested...

In addition, to reduce the pressure of shopping and stockpiling before Tet, most distribution systems plan to open almost throughout Tet, only closing on the first day of Tet. Some store systems such as Family Mart, GS25, Kingfood Mart... operate throughout Tet.

Regarding prices, market stabilization products are always maintained at least 5% lower than the average market price of products of the same specifications, types, and quality; at the same time, the program does not adjust prices up in 1 month before Tet and 1 month after Tet.

In addition, to serve low-income workers who do not have the conditions to shop early for Tet, businesses and distribution systems have implemented many stimulus programs, promotions, and deep discounts on many essential items such as poultry eggs, pork, soft drinks, cakes, candies, jams, clothes, etc. in the days leading up to Tet.

Sharing more information about price-stabilized goods at supermarket systems, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thang, Deputy General Director of Saigon Cooperative Union ( Saigon Co.op ) said that currently, the amount of stabilized goods at supermarkets is quite abundant and ensures supply during peak periods before, during and after Lunar New Year 2025. Currently, the Saigon Co.op system is making efforts to keep prices stable, increasing promotional programs at 800 points of sale so that people can shop for Tet with peace of mind.

The unit also organizes a variety of stimulus programs at points of sale, organizes price stabilization markets to bring price-stabilized goods directly to workers in export processing zones - industrial parks in Ho Chi Minh City.
