Appearing for the first time on the list, CieL was immediately awarded a Michelin star – a rare feat for a newcomer. The restaurant was founded and led by young chef Le Viet Hong (born in 1992). He studied at the Ferrandi culinary school (France) and co-founded The Monkey Gallery. He was also recently awarded the Best Young Chef of the Year by Michelin. With a modern culinary philosophy associated with hometown emotions, CieL's menu is a subtle combination of European techniques and Vietnamese ingredients.
Michelin judges rate CieL highly not only for the quality of the dishes but also for the emotional storytelling through each plate – where each ingredient such as fish, shrimp, and vegetables are exploited to the fullest in terms of flavor and emotion.

Also on this year’s list, Coco Dining was upgraded to one Michelin star after a long time of affirming its quality. Under the leadership of chef Vo Thanh Vuong, the restaurant impresses with its contemporary, creative culinary style based on traditional recipes and modern techniques, especially fermentation techniques.

According to Mr. Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of Michelin Guide, Vietnamese chefs are "returning to their roots, combining modern techniques to tell the story of their homeland through the language of cuisine".

To date, Ho Chi Minh City has a total of 5 restaurants awarded one Michelin star, including: Anan Saigon, Akuna, Long Trieu, CieL and Coco Dining.
