After the first announcement of the benchmark scores, many provinces and cities such as Hanoi , Hai Phong, Phu Tho,... adjusted the benchmark scores by 0.25 to more than 9 points for dozens of public high schools.
This lowering of the benchmark is based on the actual admission rate to schools, and at the same time, expands the opportunity for students to enter public grade 10. This also helps high schools ensure the number of students, making full use ofeducational capacity.
In 2024, Ho Chi Minh City also plans to consider additional recruitment if there are still places available. However, the admission conditions are much different from other provinces and cities.
No lowering of benchmark
In Ho Chi Minh City, after 5:00 p.m. on July 12, the department will lock the online admission confirmation portal. Candidates who are admitted but do not confirm their admission will be considered to have refused their admission rights.
Based on the synthesis and proposals of high schools, the Department will propose additional admission targets for grade 10 next school year.
Depending on the actual application situation at high schools, the Department of Education and Training decides to recruit additional students and has written instructions on implementation to ensure the rights of candidates with high exam scores and on the basis of recruiting enough students for schools that are lacking many students.
However, unlike many provinces and cities, Ho Chi Minh City has a policy of not lowering the standard score but only recruiting additional candidates.
Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the criteria for registering for additional admission are candidates who do not pass all three wishes. At the same time, candidates must have an entrance exam score higher than or equal to the standard score of the third wish of the school they are applying for admission to, and must not have their standard score lowered.
"Candidates must ensure both of the above conditions at the same time. Candidates who refuse to enroll in their wishes will not be allowed to register for additional admission," Mr. Minh emphasized.

Sharing about the 10th grade enrollment plan, Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City said: "The additional enrollment is to help students who achieve high exam scores but do not pass any of their wishes to continue studying at public schools and help high schools that are short of enrollment quotas, especially high schools in the suburbs, ensure that they meet their enrollment quotas."
A few days ago, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City also announced additional enrollment for integrated grade 10 for the 2024-2025 school year at 9 high schools.
The trend of additional recruitment is concentrated in schools with low admission scores.
In 2023, for the first time, Ho Chi Minh City will conduct additional recruitment into public high schools for high schools that have not yet met their enrollment quotas. The number of additional quotas is 4,556 students for all 108 high schools. The scores range from 10.5 to 26 points.

At the end of the application period for additional 10th grade admission in Ho Chi Minh City, schools have received 1,014 applications. These applications are concentrated in high schools in suburban areas or inner-city schools with low admission scores.
Some high schools received more applications than their quotas, such as: Ngo Gia Tu High School received 109/120 quotas, Phong Phu received 82/283 quotas, Suong Nguyet Anh received 57/40 quotas, Nguyen Van Tang received 65/274 quotas; Vinh Loc B High School received 38/99 quotas; Nguyen Huu Tho received 10/12 quotas; Nguyen Thi Dieu received 19/23 quotas; Le Thi Hong Gam received 34/35 quotas.
Because the additional 10th graders are students who fail all 3 of their choices and have an exam score equal to or higher than the 3rd choice admission score, top schools only receive very few applications.
The rate of receiving additional applications compared to the quota of some schools with high standard scores such as: Bui Thi Xuan High School received 1/14 quota, Trung Vuong received 1/35 quota, Saigon Practicing High School received 1/20 quota, Ten Lo Man High School received 1/10 quota, Luong The Vinh received 1/61 quota, Nguyen Thai Binh received 12/49 quota.
Parents and students anxiously await additional 10th grade enrollment
Mr. Vice President (Hoc Mon district) said his family is eagerly waiting for information on the additional recruitment for grade 10 of public high schools this year.
Previously, his daughter took the exam and achieved 15.5 points, 1.5 points short of Nguyen Van Cu High School. Therefore, the family really wanted to create an opportunity to enter another high school with a suitable score.
According to this parent, after learning that their child failed the 10th grade public school entrance exam, the family took their child to look into some private high schools, but found them unsuitable because the tuition at private schools was too high compared to the family's economic conditions.

Similarly, a candidate in (Binh Tan district) scored 14.75 points, not enough to be admitted to An Lac High School. Therefore, I really hope that some schools such as Phong Phu High School, Nguyen Van Linh High School, Binh Chanh District Sports Gifted High School... all have a standard score below 14.75 and will recruit more.
Consider additional points from low to high
According to the instructions of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, students who have passed the 10th grade entrance exam will confirm their enrollment from July 4 to 5:00 p.m. on July 12 online.
From July 13 to July 16, high schools will report to the Department of Education and Training the number of confirmed applications, needs and additional recruitment numbers.
After receiving the candidates' applications, the high schools that have registered for admission according to the remaining quota will consider from high to low until the quota is met for the 2024-2025 school year.
