Tra Vinh researches and selects coconut varieties with high productivity and quality.

On the afternoon of October 2, comrade Ngo Chi Cuong, member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Tra Vinh Provincial Party Committee, together with leaders of provincial departments and branches, visited the research area for agricultural plant varieties and tissue-cultured wax coconut trees; and listened to scientific research reports of a number of units of Tra Vinh University.

At the destinations, the working delegation of Tra Vinh Provincial Party Committee listened to scientists and the Council of Tra Vinh University inform that in the period 2020-2023, the school accepted 145 scientific research topics at all levels, applied in teaching, learning and serving the requirements of local economic and social development.

Tra Vinh University has successfully researched and developed wax coconut varieties using embryo culture techniques. Coconut growers using natural wax coconut varieties only produce wax fruit at a rate of 20-30%; embryo-cultured wax coconuts produce wax fruit at a rate of 85% or more. In addition to the advantage of increasing wax quality, embryo-cultured wax coconuts also have the ability to adapt to climate change, providing stable wax quality.

In addition, Tra Vinh University has coordinated with the research group of the National Key Laboratory of Plant Cell Tissue Culture - Institute of Agricultural Genetics to carry out the project "Research on coconut propagation using cell tissue culture technology and intensive coconut cultivation techniques for tissue cultured coconut" phase 1 with the goal of researching the application of plant cell tissue culture technology to create tissue cultured wax coconut seedlings through the formation of asexual embryos.

As a result, the process of propagating wax coconut by cell tissue culture method has been successfully carried out. Tissue cultured wax coconut trees have been planted for testing at the experimental cultivation area of ​​Tra Vinh University. After 3 years of planting, tissue cultured wax coconut trees were evaluated to grow well, adapt to the climate and soil conditions of Tra Vinh and produce wax fruits with thick flesh and good quality.

However, in order for the research results to be put into industrial-scale production to create high-quality, genetically uniform and low-cost seedlings, it is necessary to complete the research process in phase 2.

At the working session, Tra Vinh Provincial Party Secretary Ngo Chi Cuong requested that, in order to effectively implement the province's strategy of upgrading the coconut value chain, Tra Vinh University continue to accelerate scientific research to select high-yield, high-quality coconut varieties that can adapt to climate change.
