Review of demonstration models applying new varieties

In the spring of 2024, the Son Duong District Agricultural Service Center, in coordination with Thai Binh Golden Seed Joint Stock Company and Tu Thinh commune, conducted a trial planting of the purebred golden seed rice variety 36 in Cau Quat village, covering an area of 0.7 hectares with 6 participating households. Monitoring and evaluation in the spring of 2024 showed that the rice plants grew and developed well, were strong, had good tillering, and suffered minimal pest and disease damage (farmers did not need to use pesticides during production). The rice plants flowered relatively uniformly within 5 days, with an average height of 110-115 cm. The growing season was 115-120 days, making it a short-day variety suitable for the cropping patterns in Son Duong and with wide adaptability, yielding 70-75 quintals/hectare.

The ADI 73 super drought-tolerant hybrid rice variety has been tested in Xuan Quang commune (Chiem Hoa district) and has yielded high productivity.

Ms. Ma Thi Dinh, from Cau Quat village, Tu Thinh commune (Son Duong district), said that after three months of care and monitoring, she found that the Golden Grain 36 rice variety has a growth period of 115 days and a fairly high grain filling rate. During cultivation, the rice variety was least affected by pests and diseases, especially brown planthoppers, and no blast disease was observed. Compared to other rice varieties, in good years, Ms. Dinh's family harvests an average of about 2.2 quintals of rice per sao (approximately 1000 square meters). With the Golden Grain 36 rice variety, which produces large panicles and a high grain filling rate, Ms. Dinh hopes to achieve a yield of about 2.4 quintals per sao at harvest. If this rice variety is included in the crop structure of Tuyen Quang province, her family will definitely choose to plant it in the next season.

To gradually introduce high-quality rice varieties into production, in the spring of 2024, the Chiêm Hóa District Agricultural Service Center collaborated with ADI Agricultural Investment, Trade and Development Joint Stock Company to introduce the Phú Ưu No. 1 hybrid rice variety (ADI 73) in Xuân Quang commune and the Hải Dương Plant Seed Center to introduce the SHPT3 pure rice variety in Yên Nguyên commune. Monitoring showed that the SHPT3 pure rice variety had a spring growing season of 130-135 days, an average plant height of 110-115 cm, concentrated tillering, rapid heading, high field purity, good cold tolerance; mildly susceptible to some pests and diseases such as blast, bacterial leaf blight, brown planthopper...; the rice grains were translucent without chalky kernels, the cooked rice was delicious, soft and sticky, with a rich flavor; and the average yield reached 65 quintals/hectare.

Participating in the implementation of the Phu Uu No. 1 hybrid rice variety model (ADI 73), in the spring of 2024, Ms. Pham Thi Huong's family in Na Cooc village, Xuan Quang commune, planted over 2,000 m2. Evaluation showed that the ADI 73 hybrid rice variety has a beautiful shape, good tillering, concentrated flowering, large, long panicles with many grains, bright yellow color, drought tolerance, strong stems, good lodging resistance, and only slight susceptibility to leaf roller, stem borer, and brown planthopper; the rice grains are long, translucent, soft, sticky, and delicious; the average yield reached 78 quintals/hectare. In this year's cropping season, her family planted more than 3,000 m2 of this rice variety.

We need to buy rice varieties with a clear origin.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim, Deputy Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, in order to gradually restructure the production of high-yielding, high-quality hybrid and purebred rice varieties, the agricultural sector annually facilitates seed production companies in building trial models for new rice varieties. Through this, the results of trials are evaluated, identifying new rice varieties with high yields, good quality, and suitability to the soil and climate conditions in different regions of the province, and adding them to the province's rice variety collection. This will gradually replace purebred rice varieties with low yields and quality, poor pest and disease resistance, and low economic efficiency.

Along with developing models for testing new rice varieties, to improve rice production efficiency, localities are focusing on building concentrated rice production areas following organic farming practices, and gradually establishing rice brands in their respective areas. In addition, the agricultural sector is reviewing and restructuring hybrid rice varieties to suit local advantages, market demands, and climate change adaptations.

Currently, low-quality rice seeds are being sold online, affecting yield and production. Therefore, the agricultural sector advises people to be cautious when buying seeds and livestock online. They should only buy seeds from licensed and reputable production and business units; and avoid buying goods sold haphazardly on the market, on social media platforms, or goods of unknown origin. When buying goods, carefully check the labels, uses, expiration dates, and store agricultural supplies according to the manufacturer's and specialized agency's instructions.
