On December 12, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Da Nang City announced that it has applied the QR code initiative in propaganda work to encourage people and tourists not to feed monkeys on Son Tra Peninsula.

This is an initiative of the Son Tra - Ngu Hanh Son Inter-District Forest Protection Department (Forestry Sub-Department, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), QR codes are attached at 3 visitor control stations on Son Tra peninsula to promote to tourists.

People and tourists passing through the checkpoint will be guided by the authorities to scan the QR code to be provided with information advising against feeding monkeys and wild animals when visiting Son Tra peninsula, and warnings to avoid the risk of being attacked by monkeys and wild animals.

According to the Da Nang City Forest Protection Department, recently, the situation of monkeys moving down to Hoang Sa Street, tourist attractions such as Doi Temple, Green Lake, Bai But, Linh Ung Pagoda, Bai Bac, monkey railings... has caused many disturbances.

Especially when tourists stop their vehicles and gather in large numbers to feed monkeys, it causes traffic insecurity on the roads. In fact, there have been some cases where monkeys attack people to snatch food ( Thanh Nien reported).

"Son Tra Peninsula is an attractive tourist destination, visitors can easily observe wild animals in the wild, especially primates. Many curious tourists enjoy approaching and taking pictures with animals. However, many tourists also bring food and feed monkeys. Feeding monkeys will destroy their instinct to find food for themselves, affecting the survival ability of monkeys, and at the same time, there is a high risk of transmitting some infectious diseases from monkeys to humans," said Mr. Phan The Dung, Head of the Forest Protection Department.

Monkey 'mess' the resort

The manager of a resort on Son Tra Peninsula warned that feeding monkeys by tourists has caused serious consequences. Despite the resort’s security guards and managers constantly reminding tourists not to feed the monkeys, many tourists still lure the monkeys with fruit for fun.

"The resort does not place fruit in guest rooms to prevent monkeys from entering the rooms and scaring guests, but the monkeys still come in to search and destroy things," said the manager.

Therefore, in the past time, the Son Tra - Ngu Hanh Son Inter-District Forest Protection Department has coordinated with the inter-sectoral forces of Son Tra Border Guard Station, Son Tra District Urban Regulation Inspection Team, Tho Quang Ward People's Committee, Son Tra Peninsula Management Board and Da Nang tourist beaches... to propagate, remind and advise tourists not to feed monkeys, not to play with or have close contact with monkeys.

However, due to the nature of tourists on the road, the propaganda time is short, and the effectiveness is not as expected, so the rangers have applied the initiative of providing QR codes at the checkpoint for tourists to save the recommended information.

In addition to educating tourists, the Forest Protection Department also works with management units of resorts, eco-tourism areas, and tourism service establishments on Son Tra Peninsula to take measures to prevent tourists from feeding monkeys within the scope of their management facilities.
