The revenue of “Mai” reached nearly 500 billion VND, the total revenue of Tran Thanh’s 3 films is about to reach 1,400 billion VND. However, will the male artist easily “take all” of this huge amount of money?
How much does Tran Thanh "pocket" from the "huge" revenue?
Mai, released in theaters on the occasion of the Year of the Dragon, is the third film directed by Tran Thanh. According to Box Office Vietnam, as of February 28, the film has earned 492 billion VND.
Tran Thanh's two previous films, Bo Gia (2021) and Nha Ba Nu (2023), grossed VND427 billion and VND475 billion, respectively. Thus, Tran Thanh became the first "thousand-billion director" in Vietnam after only 3 films in theaters with a total revenue of nearly VND1,400 billion.
So as the producer of the 3 films mentioned above, how much of the 1,400 billion VND will Tran Thanh "pocket"?

Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, film media expert An Nguyen said that the producer will not receive the majority of the film's revenue, but must share a percentage with the theater chain, deduct costs for the distributor, pay income tax...
"The revenue a producer gets from a film is calculated as follows: First, we have the revenue from the film in theaters, then about 50-60% of this revenue will be divided with the theater.
The remainder will be deducted from the fee for the distributor (for example CJ CGV, Galaxy, Lotte...), then deducted from the film production cost, personal income tax or corporate income tax," Mr. An Nguyen explained.
According to experts, the profit sharing ratio between the theater and the film producer depends on the contract and negotiations of each specific case. However, according to the general formula, on average, a film with a revenue of 100 billion VND, after deducting expenses, the filmmaker earns about 30 billion VND.
Experts emphasized that film revenue comes not only from ticket sales in theaters, but also from ticket sales when shown abroad, and money earned from selling to online platforms such as Netflix, Galaxy Play, etc.
"Regarding the movie Mai, to know how much money Tran Thanh made, we need to know how many investors he had in the movie and what percentage each person got. This is business information so no one involved can reveal it.
However, according to the preliminary formula, the film Mai earned nearly 500 billion VND, the producer could earn about 166 billion VND. Subtracting the film budget of 50 billion VND that Tran Thanh announced, the film can be considered to have made a profit of about 116 billion VND," expert An Nguyen predicted.
According to Mr. An Nguyen, Tran Thanh's income from the movie Mai "may have many variables" because the male artist also takes on the roles of director, co-writer, and actor.
"We don't know for sure how much Tran Thanh will pay himself. In addition, some films may have bonus clauses. For example, if the film wins the box office, the director will receive a certain amount of money as a bonus," the expert added.

What do film directors and producers in Vietnam say?
Director Vo Thanh Hoa said that many movies have high revenue, but before reaching the hands of producers, many fees have to be deducted.
Sharing with Dan Tri reporter, director Vo Thanh Hoa gave the following formula for calculating the amount of money earned from movies shown in theaters: Revenue - Cinema share (sharing ratio with theaters) 50% - Distribution fee 5% - Production costs - Production shareholders - Personal income tax = Amount of profit earned.
“However, depending on the case, there will be more specific numbers,” the director said.

Previously, in 2021, Vo Thanh Hoa explained the number that the filmmaker of Bo Gia received when the film reached a revenue of 400 billion VND.
"If the movie Bo Gia reaches 400 billion VND, the share for cinemas, meaning cinema complexes when showing the movie in their screening rooms, will usually fluctuate between 50-55%. Thus, the other 400 billion VND will be divided into 2 parts. Tran Thanh's crew will receive 200 billion VND, and the cinema will receive 200 billion VND.
Then we have to deduct the issuance fee. This issuance fee will account for about 4.5-5%. Thus, Tran Thanh will have about 190 billion VND left.
On that figure of 190 billion VND, we must deduct the film's production costs. For example, if Bo Gia cost 30 billion VND to make, Tran Thanh would still have 160 billion VND in net profit," Vo Thanh Hoa analyzed.
Vo Thanh Hoa added that Tran Thanh is both an actor, director and screenwriter... of Bo Gia, so the male artist needs to collect those fees, then add them to the total amount he spent on the basis of 30 billion VND in film production costs.
"For example, if Tran Thanh owns 70% of the investment shares in the film, the remaining figure will be 112 billion VND equivalent to that 70%. After that, personal income tax must be deducted. Thus, if Tran Thanh owns 70% of the shares in a film worth 400 billion VND, he will bring in more than 100 billion VND," Vo Thanh Hoa explained.
According to experts, film producers only receive a moderate amount of the total revenue the film achieves (Photo: Facebook character).
In May 2023, when the movie Lat mat 6: The fateful ticket caused a "fever" at the box office, Ly Hai also shared about the movie's revenue and the amount of money the filmmaker received.
“A movie that earns 100 billion VND in revenue is not as easy as people think. It is not true that just by putting money in, you will make a profit. First of all, if the movie earns 100 billion VND in revenue, the filmmaker will only receive 40 billion VND.
If this figure happens in the first week of the film's release, the film will receive 50 billion VND. The reason is that in the first week, it is divided in half, but in the second week, the producer only gets 40% and the theater chain gets 60%," Ly Hai said.
After deducting the amount shared with the theater, Ly Hai said the remaining amount needs to be deducted from about 10% of the cost for the distributor, minus personal income tax or corporate income tax.
Ly Hai added that the amount of money a filmmaker receives depends on how long the film is shown, 1 month or half a month.
Speaking with reporters, Mr. Lucas Luan Nguyen - Lecturer at Hoa Sen University ( Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnamization Consultant at Netflix - answered the question: "Who will get the audience's ticket money?".
"When you buy a 70,000 VND movie ticket, the first direct beneficiary is the cinema. Then, according to the revenue sharing model, the next stakeholders are considered.
"As for how much the distributor keeps and how much is given to the film producer, it depends on each different negotiation," said Mr. Lucas Luan Nguyen.
