The conference was organized by the Ministry of Education and Training, connecting with 600 points including Departments of Education and Training; universities and vocational education institutions across the country.

Equip core technology skills

Sharing at the conference, a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that from the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year, the department has organized a pilot program of digital citizenship skills education for 22 districts and Thu Duc City, preparing for mass deployment throughout the city in the 2024-2025 school year.

Students need to be equipped with core skills such as using technology responsibly and safely; critical thinking, distinguishing between real and fake information; knowing how to protect personal data, respecting copyright; and having civilized and ethical behavior in the online environment.

In that spirit, Ho Chi Minh City aims to form digital citizenship capacity early, consistently and integratedly, especially right from primary school - the stage when children begin to be exposed to technology and form basic habits in the digital environment.

However, during the implementation process, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training also faced a number of difficulties, including the difference in equipment and information technology infrastructure between schools; digital citizenship skills are still a new concept for many teachers; lack of standardized learning materials at the national level; and parents still lack basic knowledge to protect their children online.

Similarly, a representative of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted said that recently the school has implemented school-wide emulation movements with the themes "Innovation and digital transformation" and "Digital education for the masses" to promote the spirit of learning, applying technology, and spreading digital culture among the community of teachers and students.

From the 2024-2025 school year, many specific activities have been implemented, including establishing the GART Robotics Club; organizing extracurricular classes, creative playgrounds and mock contests, simulating the format of international exams...

In learning and teaching, the school has promoted the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching and training activities, effectively deploying suitable AI tools such as: virtual learning assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini), software to support writing and editing text (Grammarly);

Deploy testing, surveying and academic competition activities through online platforms to improve assessment efficiency and promote students' initiative in learning;

Encourage and pilot advanced teaching and learning models on digital platforms in the direction of blended learning, including: smart classrooms, online interactive learning groups, self-study activities with the support of virtual assistants...

Solving the problems

At the conference, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc affirmed that digital transformation is no longer an option but has become an inevitable requirement, an irreversible trend, determining national competitiveness and sustainable development of the country.

Especially in the field of education, digital transformation opens up unprecedented opportunities to improve the quality of teaching and learning, innovate educational methods, personalize learning pathways and expand access to knowledge for all people. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated the key role of digital technology in maintaining educational activities and ensuring uninterrupted learning.

The Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress emphasized the need to promote national digital transformation and develop the digital economy based on science, technology, and innovation. The education development strategy for the 2021-2030 period also clearly defines the goal of building digital education and smart education.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, in recent times, the education sector has implemented this important task and achieved some important results such as building and putting into use a database for the entire education sector.

From there, deploy application platforms serving state management, school administration, shared online teaching, testing and assessment, shared digital learning materials, providing online public services, cashless payments and developing digital capacity throughout the industry.

However, the education sector still has to face a number of difficulties that need to be thoroughly resolved in the coming time to successfully complete the set goals, such as lack of network infrastructure and Internet transmission equipment; limited resource mobilization for digital transformation (both in terms of human resources and finance); uneven digital capacity;

The industry-wide database needs to be continuously updated and seamlessly connected with national databases and specialized databases; it is necessary to develop and further improve common platform systems for sharing across the industry.

Upgrading STEM subjects

At the conference, Dr. Pham Huy Hoang - Director of the Center for Technology and Digital Transformation Solutions in Education, Hanoi University of Science and Technology - said that the digital transformation process is taking place strongly in Vietnam.

According to Mr. Huy Hoang, the future generation of citizens with general education need to upgrade STEM subjects in the training program at all levels, adding programming and AI content; vocational training, including digital technology application content, AI in the training program.

For the current generation of citizens, transformational training such as continuing education, second degree training, providing opportunities for those who need (or are forced) to change careers. At the same time, training community digital capacity, leveraging the power of digital infrastructure and open education platforms, for example MOOC; building a digital skills certification system and deploying training widely.
