Specifically, Dr. Huynh Trung Hieu, Department of Pediatrics, Tay Ninh Xuyen A General Hospital, said that on June 1, while swimming in the pool, the boy drowned for about 2 minutes. After receiving first aid at Trang Bang Medical Center, the patient was transferred to the emergency room at Tay Ninh Xuyen A General Hospital in a state of acute respiratory failure, high fever, lethargy, agitation, and labored breathing.
The patient was transferred to the Pediatrics Department for monitoring and intensive treatment. Here, the child was prescribed continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP), warmed with a lamp, antibiotics, pain relievers, fever reducers, electrolyte balance, etc. After more than a day of treatment, the patient overcame the critical stage and responded well to the treatment. It is expected that the patient will be discharged in about 3 days.

According to Dr. Hieu, children who drown and die or have serious complications such as respiratory failure, pneumonia, or brain damage due to prolonged lack of oxygen are mostly due to not receiving emergency care or not receiving emergency care properly. The first steps of initial resuscitation play an important role in saving the child's life. The boy's case was very fortunate to receive initial first aid and timely hospitalization.
"Currently, it is summer vacation, which is also the time when drowning accidents increase. To limit the situation of children drowning, parents should not let children play or swim alone without supervision, do not let children play near ponds, lakes, rivers, streams... especially young children. When swimming in a pool or the sea, parents must put life jackets on children, always observe and monitor children during the whole playing process" - Doctor Hieu recommends.
If drowning occurs, when giving first aid to a child, absolutely do not turn the child upside down on your shoulder and run without performing CPR and artificial respiration for the child... This prolongs the time of brain hypoxia, causing brain damage later if the child survives. As soon as a child is found to have drowned, it is necessary to immediately give first aid and take the child to the nearest medical facility for emergency treatment, avoiding dangerous consequences and sequelae.
