Get rid of the 'online miracle doctor' completely.

The explosion of social media has led to the persistent emergence of "miracle healers," with one method of treatment often followed by another, albeit a different, modified version.

Videos about "cure-all methods using lemon and salt, sunbathing..." that the TV presenter's account has posted recently have attracted millions of viewers and thousands of comments - Photo: screenshot

Just a few days after the Ministry of Health drafted a proposal for stricter penalties, fining "miracle healers" and "online doctors" 10-30 million VND, a Facebook account under the name BTV, which specialized in promoting the use of warm lemon and salt water to treat illnesses, announced it would temporarily suspend promoting this treatment method.

Many other "miracle healers" circumvent the law by adding the phrase "this is just a personal experience, not a recommendation to follow."

The explosion of social media has led to the persistent emergence of "miracle healers," with one method of treatment often followed by another, albeit a different, modified version.

Previously, these so-called "miracle healers" always appeared with the introduction, "My family has been practicing medicine for three generations." After being penalized and having their social media accounts deleted, they have recently transformed into "miracle healers" using natural remedies such as sunbathing, drinking lemon and salt water, alkaline water, etc., to cure diseases.

Patients often have a desperate, all-seeing-all mentality, seeking out any online miracle healer they hear about. Many of those who turn to these "online miracle healers" are elderly, sick, or in dire straits, facing pain, despair, and seeking their help as a last resort.

There are people whose illnesses are not cured, and some even face life-threatening situations, because they stop taking medication or treatment prescribed by real doctors, and instead use mysterious therapies recommended by "miracle healers."

A few days ago, Mr. NTN, the "miracle healer" known for his treatment using alkaline water, was arrested by the police.

Initial reports indicate that this group received up to 100 billion VND from people who came to drink alkaline water to cure their illnesses, showing that desperate patients lost large sums of money to these "miracle healers," while their illnesses remained unchanged.

The continued existence of unproven medical treatments is a blatant disregard for the law and a challenge to the right of every citizen to be protected.

Because when patients are bombarded with misleading information for a long time, coupled with marketing techniques from "miracle healers" (using people who tell seemingly true stories of recovery or years of use and regaining their health...), they risk being drawn in without realizing it, and subsequently facing health risks.

In recent years, the relevant authorities, the Ministry of Health, have issued regulations to address the issue of "online miracle healers," but the response seems slow and not truly decisive. They crack down on one group only for another to appear, and people continue to be affected.

There was even a doctor at a central hospital who treated thousands of people, but his elderly parents were plagued by the "miracle healer" problem; the doctor's parents trusted the fake doctor more than their son, the real doctor, and only changed their minds after losing money and suffering harm.

With the proposal to increase penalties for "online doctors and miracle healers," it is hoped that this problem will be addressed, restoring a clean information space for those who want to take care of their health and have illnesses that need treatment.

Besides treatment, more doctors and hospitals need to strengthen communication, provide standardized health information, and improve the quality of medical examinations and treatment so that patients can have convenient access to medical care.

Only then, year after year, will we avoid having to come back and talk about the old story: "the online miracle doctor".
