With the advantage of planting once, quickly harvesting and exploiting for many years, and stable product output, the green hemp planting model of Mr. Pham Ngoc Tan's family, Dong Ich commune (Lap Thach) initially brought high economic efficiency, motivating people in Dong Ich commune to boldly change the crop structure.
It is estimated that with 1.5 hectares of green hemp, Mr. Pham Ngoc Tan, Dong Ich commune, Lap Thach district earns over 200 million VND per year.
After retiring, instead of resting and enjoying his old age like everyone else, Mr. Pham Ngoc Tan still maintained his enthusiastic working spirit. With the support of his family, in 2022, Mr. Tan rented 4 hectares of rice fields and started his own business.
After visiting and studying the model of Tien Mai Production and Trade Service Cooperative, Dinh Trung Ward (Vinh Yen) and receiving the Cooperative's commitment to consume all output, Mr. Tan decided to choose green hemp as the main crop to develop the family economy and put it into trial planting on 1.5 hectares.
Mr. Tan said: “Green ramie is a plant with high usage value. The bark of the tree trunk is processed into good quality textile fibers; the leaves are used to make ramie cakes, extract essential oils, produce natural dyes for the food industry... In addition, this is also a plant that is easy to care for, drought-resistant, and has few pests and diseases.”
Due to its suitability to the soil and climate conditions and proper care, after taking root in Dong Ich fields, Mr. Tan's family's green hemp plants grew well and were ready for harvest after just a few months.
However, like many other startup stories, when he first tried a new crop, Mr. Tan also encountered many difficulties. Due to lack of experience in harvesting, the first crop had low dry fiber yield, only about 3 quintals/ha.
Faced with that situation, Mr. Tan hired some experienced workers from Yen Lac district, Tam Dao to work, and at the same time instructed local workers in harvesting and stripping the bark. By the second harvest, the dry fiber yield from Mr. Tan's family's green hemp doubled, reaching nearly 6 quintals/ha.
While working, he learned and gained experience. After only the first two harvests, Mr. Tan was confident about the productivity and economic efficiency that the green hemp plant brought.
Mr. Tan said: "The output will increase over time, possibly reaching and exceeding 1 ton of dry fiber/ha per harvest." In particular, through signing a contract to purchase products with Tien Mai Production and Trade Service Cooperative at a selling price of 40,000 VND/kg, it is expected that 1 hectare of green hemp can bring Mr. Tan an income of nearly 200 million VND/year, far exceeding that of conventional rice and corn cultivation.
Not only that, green hemp also has the outstanding advantage of only needing to be planted once to be able to harvest within 5 to 10 years; each year can be harvested from 5 to 6 times. Therefore, growers only have to invest once, saving a lot of costs for seedlings, land preparation and planting.
Not to mention, in case the tree falls due to harsh weather such as hail, whirlwinds, etc., people just need to cut it down and the tree will grow again without having to replant it like some other crops.
With outstanding advantages and high economic value, in the coming time, Mr. Tan will continue to re-plan the fields, invest in irrigation systems, and plant 1 more hectare of green hemp. In addition, he will plant some other medicinal plants and agricultural plants such as Morinda officinalis, sugarcane, etc. to maximize the area and green the vacant land.
The conversion of ineffective crops to green hemp in particular and medicinal plants in general in the direction of linking production and product consumption with businesses from Mr. Tan's model has been opening up a new direction in agricultural development in Dong Ich, adding motivation for local people in changing crop structure.
